In every local region there are daily events: planned, serendiptous, environmental and unavoidable that deserve mention.|
A wave of similar reactions rippled through the city last week as news of the proposal spread. Within days a neighborhood-driven opposition movement was growing, fed in part by the secretive nature of port and company officials in their first steps at outreach.

Just yesterday a constituent asked my opinion on the possible PCS sulfur smelting plant at their Aurora, North Carolina mine, to which I answered, "we may not have to concern ourselves with this since PCS is considering the Portsmouth Marine Terminal to site the plant."

I had the opportunity Thursday to participate in the opening ceremony, in Kinston NC, of the traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall, the "Wall That Heals". This wall is a half scale replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington DC.

United States Highway 17 has now completed the southern leg of the proposed bypass, around part of New Bern, which will make travel much faster for those traveling along North Carolina's farthest east, north / south corridor.

Another wildfire sparked by lightening, on June 19, 2011, has affected North Carolina. The wildfire in Pender County's Holly Shelter Gamelands, Juniper Road and County Line Road, and 8 miles North of Topsail is continuing to burn out of control.

Containment of the fire has been slowly increasing, although it still holds a potential threat of growing, yet again. In little over a month, the Pains Bay fire has gone from 80% contained and having effected 25,678 acres to now being 95% contained and has almost doubled.
