After a distinguished career serving the citizens of North Carolina, Chief Deputy Harry W. Meredith, Jr. has retired. His retirement began on December 1, 2011.

Chief Deputy Meredith started his career in 1985 with the North Carolina Department of Crime Control and Public Safety. He served as a Reserve Patrol Sergeant at the Washington Police Department from 1987 to 1988. In 1989, he began full time law enforcement as a member of the Durham Police Department. Beaufort County is announcing that the pick up and removal of construction and demolition debris throughout the county will be winding down. Residents who still have this debris related to the Hurricane Irene storm event should make plans to have this set out in front of their homes on a state maintained right of way by Sunday November 20, 2011.

Due to the effects of Hurricane Irene, students will not report to school for the remainder of this week. Our tentative plan is to resume classes on Tuesday, September 6, if conditions permit. Make-up days have not been scheduled at this time. Parents and the public will be made aware as soon as a schedule is finalized.

BCS staff members will be updated later today on the status of their reporting for Thursday and Friday.

Mrs. Mamie Jefferson Blake, age 90, a resident of Spring Arbor of Greenville, and a former resident of Waterford Place of Washington, died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012, at Vidant Inpatient Hospice of Greenville.
Mrs. Katie Chambers Sawyer, age 68, a resident of 476 Up The Lane, Pantego died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, at her home.
Mrs. Elva Hudson Smith, 91, a resident of 1648 Beech Ridge Road, Belhaven, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, at Vidant Inpatient Hospice in Greenville.
