Goose Creek State Park Calendar of Events for April | Eastern North Carolina Now

Sunday, April 3      The Southern Copperhead      3 p.m.

One of the most feared animals in eastern North Carolina is also a victim of many misconceptions. Visit Goose Creek’s Visitor Center to debunk some of the myths and misconceptions about North Carolina’s most common venomous snake, the Copperhead. Join us as we discover the truth about this potentially dangerous, but often misunderstood creature.

Saturday, April 9       Coffee with Birds      3 p.m.

Spring has sprung and the birds are winging their way back north! Meet in the park’s Visitor Center to enjoy gourmet coffee and a sweet snack during a discussion of bird habitats and bird-friendly yards. We’ll identify birds at the park’s feeders, and weather permitting, take a hike to spot some avian residents. This one-hour program is sponsored by the Friends of Goose Creek State Park.

Sunday, April 10       Tracking the Elusive Black Bear       3 p.m.

We admire them for their size, strength and beauty, but most of us have never seen one in the wild. The American Black Bear is alive and well in Eastern North Carolina! Join us in the auditorium of Goose Creek’s Environmental Education and Visitor Center to explore and learn more about this elusive giant.

Sunday, April 17       Meet the Sliders       3 p.m.

The Sliders are an interesting family. They are known for the company they keep, especially while lounging in the sun for hours-on-end. They eat a variety of plants and animals and are very distinguished residents of swamps and river-bottoms. Come to the Visitor Center prepared to meet two members of this reptile family and learn what makes them so unique.

Sunday, April 24       Spring Boardwalk Hike       3 p.m.

Not too hot, not too cold, spring in the eastern part of North Carolina is one of the most beautiful times of year. What better time of year to hike and discover the beautiful spring color as it emerges from the winter cold? Butterflies, song birds, reptiles, amphibians, dragonflies, and many more can be seen on the park’s most popular trail, the Palmetto Boardwalk. Please come dressed for the weather and meet at the Visitor Center for a mile and a half walk through Goose Creek State Park’s swamp.
