Trump Extended Secret Service Protection To His Adult Children, Top Officials Before Departure

Proposed Tract O and part of Tract K: Location of Good Ground is Key for any Wise Development ...
(commented on January 23rd, 2021 @ 9:23 pm)
Any large project would need to utilize engineered system, with for septic if sewer is not readily available, with new innovative holding tanks /filtration systems.

A day school with a cafeteria and showers is allowed a flow rate of 8 gallons per student, per day per student /teacher, which equates to 8 students per bedroom (which is how I look at everything, with the flow rate of 120 per bedroom, per day).
A Tribute to a Combat Medic
(commented on January 23rd, 2021 @ 11:05 am)
Thank-you Bobby Tony for this sincere, and well written tribute to the one guy that every soldier must learn to love - the medic.

In case some of our readers do not already know this, the Conscientious Objector turned medic-to-the-men was probably the most dangerous positions in battle, always working to save others, often in prone positions, while others fought.

For Asian fighters, especially the Japanese, and I am sure that the North Vietnamese learned such fighting the Nips in WW II, the Medic was always a big target.

Kill the man without the gun helping his brothers-in-arms, and the troops could become just one big bit more demoralized in battle.

War is Hell.

Thank-you Bobby Tony, and to your good friend Ken Blakely - may he rest in the bosom of his Savior - for your service to our Republic, to all of us who did not go to Vietnam. We are forever in your debt for that service.

Stan Deatherage's Integrity as a Commissioner is Challenged by Dr. Tom Penders
(commented on October 26th, 2010 @ 12:33 pm)
Dr. Penders,

It seems you are playing a dishonest game of semantics, because I’m sure you know the definition of integrity: “a concept of consistency of actions, values, methods, measures, principles, expectations and outcomes.” Despite what you say, obviously, you were questioning my father's integrity by saying in your letter to Mr. Richardson, "Apparently Stan does not believe that he is accountable to the voters." Again, you questioned his integrity, in your comment below, by saying that you were attacking my father’s 'responsiveness,' 'reasonableness,' and 'objectivity.' It scares me a little that you would try to manipulate a fact pertaining to your own behavior; since, in your profession, you are trusted to help rearrange the thoughts and behaviors of others. Just admit it: You were questioning his integrity; and, now, I’m questioning yours.

Is Our Country in the Crapper?
(commented on April 21st, 2012 @ 1:24 pm)
Ms. Rufino has given us a great analogy to frame the debate of the role of the federal government. She has also given us a great reason why the Tea Party movement is fading quickly as an ideology. The role of parenthood is clear: to raise our children to be independent, productive individuals in our society. Being a responsible parent requires that we instill in our children a sense of responsibility for themselves and those around them. Children cannot and do not learn these traits on their own. The reality is that we give them everything they need to develop. Inherent in that role is a balance to be played as the child grows older; the growing child must understand the boundaries that society and civility place on them. If there are no effective and defined boundaries, then unbridled freedom becomes anarchy very quickly. The government is not our parent. However, I would suggest that as our society continues to evolve in directions our founders could never have fathomed, effective governance becomes more and more critical to our ability to move forward as a nation.

WWLD: "Occupy Wall Street" - it's their job
(commented on October 9th, 2011 @ 9:55 am)
As a liberal and former protester, I find Stan's comments to be spot on. The only thing that I would add is that protesters in general-- left wing or right wing-- are typically filled with folks that have entirely too much time on their hands and read way too much of writings that agree with their own ideological perspective. One of my favorite professors at UMASS was a lead scholar at the conservative think-tank, The American Enterprise Institute. His advice to me was to, "always be careful of overstating issues. Overreaction makes you look silly." That hit me hard back then; it remains true today.

An Educated Voter is an Asset to Beaufort County
(commented on April 20th, 2014 @ 3:54 pm)
Actual numbers aren’t important to most voters, like Mr. Taylor stated, so let me state my position differently. The waste I plan on cutting for the Sheriff’s Office is everything that doesn’t work – everything that does not protect property and lives of our citizens, and that which hinders deputy performance.

I intend on setting policy in place to correct any issues deputies may have dealing with the public or other agencies in Beaufort County. I will encourage deputies to work with the Police and Highway Patrol to create a safe environment for everyone.

My opponent thinks that he can bully and twist the truth to gain votes, again I ask the public to consider his record. He has proved himself to be many things, but a businessman he is not, nor an honest man.

Voting starts in four days. Correct problems in our county, vote Donald Dixon for Sheriff.
An Educated Voter is an Asset to Beaufort County
(commented on April 17th, 2014 @ 7:26 am)
I guess I should be flattered by my opponent’s attacks on me; if it weren’t for me stating my position on important issues, he wouldn’t have anything to talk about! Take the jail for example; my opponent was for wasting 20 plus million dollars before he heard I was against it. The same holds true for our second amendment rights, he stated first that he would do whatever the Government told him to do – that is, until he heard that I promised to stand up for your rights under the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. At the Tea Party Forum, my opponent was pressed on the question of protecting the second amendment; he stood up and said a bunch of words without answering the question.

My opponent would want you to believe he ran the jail and the Sheriff’s office for 13 years, I suppose that is true and one on the reasons it has been mismanaged the way it has. Issues in the jail were all from neglect, and I believe calculated deceit on the commissioners and public. If the building was taken care of the way it should have been, we wouldn’t be talking about building a jail at all right now.

My opponent was “Chief Investigator” when BCSO mailed out letters to taxpaying citizens telling them that their property crime wasn’t NOT important enough to investigate, he blamed it on commissioners. It was soon exposed as a lie.

My opponent has come out with 4 to 5 different costs for the “accreditation program”, starting at 4,200 up to $9,500 a year now. That is a lie. The COST of CELEA is much more than the yearly fee. You have to consider the 2-4 junkets per year involving 3-4 people, audits, manpower, and other costs and hoops to jump. Only after you add up the TRUE cost of something can you see its value – CELEA has no value. My opponent can jump up and down all he wants, but he obviously is no businessman, if so he would know there are more costs involved than just membership. [Oh, and the REAL cost of the piece of paper is over $150,000 a year.]

When I state crime has gone up in Beaufort County, I am talking about the trend of crime. You can’t take a single number and know anything about what’s going on, it takes multiple points to get the trend, or flow. I guess my opponent’s English degree didn’t teach him that.

My opponent has a track record as a Democrat; I wonder how different it would be now that he claims to be a Republican.

Of the Republican candidates: I am the best choice based on education, with a B.S. and a Masters Degree in a subject the actually benefits the Office I seek. I have over 30 years of business experience with 26 years being self employed in Beaufort County, the others all made a living off Government checks. I am the only candidate that has patrolled Beaufort County as a deputy sheriff; I know what the problems are and how to fix them.

I ask the citizens of this county, my home, to vote Dixon for Sheriff – fix the problem at the Sheriff’s Office, don’t put the problem back. Thank you.
Donald Dixon

Rejection of the Electoral College is the Surest Path to the Destruction of this Country
(commented on July 4th, 2019 @ 11:32 am)
Stan, I'm glad you get it and understand WHY the Electoral College was the system our founders came up with to honor our particular government system. We are a federation, and NOT a consolidated union. This fact, this reality, is lost on most of the people we talk to. Ms. Anthony, I think this point is also lost on you as well. I don't mean that with any disrespect at all. You aren't really making a point, other than to point out what others have supported. The 1960's was a time of great social upheaval and rebellion against everything that had been accepted for most of our history. When Andrew Jackson and then Abraham Lincoln wanted to change the character of this country and mold it into something that was politically more advantageous, they first worked very hard to unmoor our country from its foundations. They began to re-characterize the nature of the US Constitution and the nature of our federal union. Once government benefitted from their deception and once it grew into a more aggressive and dominating beast, it took over education and began teaching/indoctrinating our children in the lessons that would continue to dissociate our national values and the foundations required to secure a limited federal government and liberty from our collective understanding of our country's identity. Then politicians came along, such as Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, Truman, LBJ, Nixon, Clinton, Bush, and Obama who saw the federal government in a different light than our Founders did and the States who debated and eventually ratified the Constitution did. They ignored the original responsibility of the government, which was simply to abide by the limited responsibilities in the Constitution and to leave all the rest of governing responsibilities to the individual states. Rather, they saw the federal government as the solution to EVERY PROBLEM. They saw it as the government of greatly consolidated functions; they saw the federal government as the one government that knew best and could govern best. FDR tried hard to enshrine a "Second Bill of Rights" which, he explained, would help overcome the inherent evil of our American system which produces inequality by providing new rights such the right to a job, to food, to clothing, to recreation, to a home, to healthcare, and to a good education, as well as the freedom from the "fear" of unemployment, aging, sickness, and unfair competition. Teddy Roosevelt articulated the precursor to this Second Bill of Rights. But all of the presidents mentioned above latched onto this "new set of rights" and used their administrations to further them in one way or another. All ignored their oaths to the Constitution. They also needed to unchain or unmoor founding principles and institutions from our collective understanding of what our country was founded on and what is needed to ensure her longevity and the longevity of the individual rights of ALL citizens of the US. That is what the abolition of the Electoral College is all about. It's a political movement, not a righteous movement. The point I am trying to make is that the presidents you mention, whether they had a "D" or a "R" after their name, were ALL progressive presidents. Not a single one of them had any respect for the system of government that was given to us and that, at its core (because the Constitution is essentially unchanged) is STILL IN PLACE. The Electoral College is a key foundational element of that system. Our government system does NOT exist to benefit any political elite. It doesn't exist to benefit any political party. It doesn't even exist to benefit the federal government over the state governments. It doesn't exist to destroy the federal nature of our union (because certainly that would favor and benefit the federal government). It exists to maintain the STATUS QUO - to maintain the vital and critical relationship between the federal government and the States (ie, federalism, sovereign v. sovereign, dual sovereignty). Why? It is this relationship that was intended to be the last and most important of all the Checks and Balances on the government in DC. Checks and balances exist and are essential in order to prevent any unconstitutional laws, policies, executive actions, and even court rulings from being enforced on We the People. To allow such is the very definition of tyranny and government abuse. Anyone who favors or supports any changes to our system which undermines the very goals of our system (to maintain a limited government, to prevent government tyranny, and to preserve and protect our inalienable and other liberty rights) needs to have his or her head examined. Our country was founded on the notion of liberty and our system was chosen because it was deemed best to secure liberty the longest and most effectively.Any person who favors such changes as to erode our founding goals, I would argue, does not deserve to live in this country and is unfit to help secure the blessings of liberty to subsequent generations - "to the generations to come and millions yet unborn."
What Happened?
(commented on September 23rd, 2018 @ 11:58 am)
Thanks Alex, but the problem is liberal Democrats. It’s liberal Democrats who don’t know how to be civil or to act respectful to those who voted this president in. I grew up in New Jersey and went to grad school in NYC. Trust me, Trump is not the problem. Intolerant Democrats are.

, Bobby,
You should have kept those sections in. They make excellent points. Another point to make is that the courts issue OPINIONS only. That was the intent and the original purpose of the courts — to issue opinions for the benefit of the other branches. It was the court itself, in Marbury v. Madison (1803) which gave itself greater power. It declared itself to be the ultimate authority on the meaning and intent of the Constitution and of federal laws. We all know that is ridiculous since appointees are political appointments rather than strict legal scholars. The person with the greatest understanding of the Constitution as it was written and adopted SHOULD be the one appointed to the bench. Rather, appointees are made based on their willingness to advance women’s rights, Hispanics rights, affirmative action, etc etc. They are appointed to advance a political agenda, just as you mention (to advance issues from the bench which can’t be advanced through the normal democratic l(legislative) process. And then in the case Aaron v Cooper, the Supreme Court handed down a rule that once it rendered an opinion, every state was REQUIRED to enforce it. They could not challenge it or choose to ignore it. This goes against the commentary of our founders and our framers on the role of the federal judiciary.

Why gun control laws do not work – A personal opinion again.
(commented on July 9th, 2016 @ 6:17 pm)
If criminals followed our laws, we would not need more laws. It does absolutely no good to create more laws just to have more charges. The only thing that will slow the killings is SWIFT AND HARSH punishment. Not a forty year wait in prison, with enough time to contemplate finishing what you started. When there are multiple witnesses such as the church shooting in South Carolina, death should have found its mark within 72 hours of catching him.
My yearly Medical exam – A new Medicare benefit
(commented on May 18th, 2016 @ 1:44 pm)
Went to get my yearly inspection the other day. Nurse checked my weight, height, checked my BP, eye sight, took a blood sample, and had me check my aim by peeing in a tiny little cup, then went to wait for the doctor. Doc comes in, listens to my thumpin gizzard, taps on my back while I am inhaling and exhaling, assaulted my arthritic knees with a rubber mallet and then asked if I was still on my diet.

ME: YEP. WHY?
DOC: YOURE NOT LOSING ANY MORE WEIGHT. WHAT DID YOU HAVE FOR BREAKFAST?
ME: 5 EGGS.
DOCTOR: UH...DONT YOU THINK THAT WAS A BIT MUCH?
ME: NO. YOU SAID EGGS WERE GOOD FOR MY DIET.
DOCTOR: WELL, THATS A LOT. WERE THEY FRIED, SCRAMBLED, POACHED, OR BOILED?
ME: CADBURYS.

Fancy waterfront vs drivable roads in Washington NC
(commented on August 26th, 2013 @ 1:10 pm)
Dear Mr. Pyle,

Thank you for your input. It is always a pleasure to hear from any concerned citizen about our town. Our organization is made up of volunteers, who like yourself want to see a better Washington in the future.

I can’t speak for the City of Washington but would like to clarify this issue.

I believe most of the roads you mentioned are state roads (except for Hackney). Funds for road improvements would be done by NCDOT. I would suggest you address your concerns with them too.

Best regards,

Ray Leary is right on target. He makes a clear point about continuing to vote and push back on all fronts. Not voting is surrender. One does not need to be rude to succeed in pushing back. We need to use our imagination and not sanction all those nuances that support the left.
Even tiny pushes count.

Most of these Republicans go which ever the wind is blowing. We can now begin the weeding out process. There is another election in two years. We do not need to be touchy feely and understanding with these dead beat Republicans . There is no honor in hold your nose and vote Republican. This is an opportunity for conservative Republicans to run for office.

Beaufort County Commissioners Vote 5 to 2 in Support of Governor Perdue on her Veto of Photo ID for Elections
(commented on July 8th, 2011 @ 4:02 pm)
Requiring photo identification would without a doubt eliminate the various forms of voter fraud. People would no longer be able to vote multiple times using false identities as well as the stated issue of illegal immigrants. My question is why would you want to prevent a flawed system to be remedied? If a politician want votes so desperately, that they don't care how the race is won, then they shouldn't be running, much less elected. Which goes to show how confident they must be are in themselves and what they "stand for".

Commissioners Deatherage and Richardson are Inducted into the ACLU 'Wall of Shame'
(commented on June 20th, 2010 @ 4:46 am)
I'll try to put together an Equal Protection overview. Meanwhile, this paper (papers.ssrn.com) serves as a good primer on some of the other arguments likely to be made by anti-deportation activists (e.g., preemption of local action by federal regulation).
Commissioners Deatherage and Richardson are Inducted into the ACLU 'Wall of Shame'
(commented on June 18th, 2010 @ 3:09 pm)
Unfortunately, some of the proposed measures--at least as they are described by the ACLU article--might trigger Equal Protection Clause difficulties. For example, the Supreme Court has overturned laws that impact the "innocent children" of illegals. Check out Plyler v. Doe, 457 U.S. 202 (1982).

Why would Gary Brinn oppose Limited Voting? Why would any Republican do so?
(commented on October 18th, 2012 @ 6:44 am)
Editor's (Beaufort Observer) response: Stan is correct in all that he says. We differ only on the obvious soft assumption that DOJ could be convinced. Not the current DOJ. Jerry Langley and David Moore would see to in one phone call. A Romney DOJ would be irrelevant because any Pre-clearance would be appealed to the DC Court of Appeals and it would be killed there, not on a constitutional issue but on the factual basis. Hood's plan of 2 minority districts and 5 at-large would address the retrogression issue but would not likely fly because it would be statistical packing with a very distorted gerrymander. But you are precisely correct, without virtually unanimous agreement among the BOC, the current system is not going to change.

Did you and Steve evaluate preferential voting?

Voter Fraud
(commented on March 18th, 2012 @ 9:43 pm)
Much of this great country is currently embroiled in the Voter Photo-ID question, an issue that could easily decide the results of a close election. I grew up believing that the United States was founded on certain principles that set it apart from the rest of the nations of the world. In addition to our basic rights, two of these principles stand out above the rest. The first of these tenets i...s that a person accused of a crime is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and the second is the right of all citizens to vote in free elections.

It has often been said that it is better to let 1,000 guilty parties go free than convict a single innocent person. Using the same premise with regard to elections, isn't it better to allow a dozen voters without IDs to cast ballots than to deny even a single person who is otherwise entitled to vote? If we are to err on this issue it should be on the side of over-inclusion, and not unjust exclusion.
