"Every Picture Tells a Story ... Don't It:" On the Road - The Colorful Shenandoah, Chapter IV | Eastern North Carolina Now

In Staunton on North New Street, there is still a plethora of quaint shops here on this street near the college: Above. At the End of New Street, where it bisects West Frederick Street is the First Presbyterian Church of Staunton, which is just across the street from Mary Baldwin College, which is a Presbyterian college: Below.     photos by Stan Deatherage

Turn the corner in every city, even one the size of Staunton, and you can find just about anything. Here on South Market Street, near the Stonewall Jackson Hotel, I found a Jewish temple, Temple House of Israel, and a community playhouse, Blackfriars Playhouse, which concentrates in Shakespearian theater: Above and then below.     photos by Stan Deatherage

Here at the corner of South Market Street and Greenville Avenue is the rather imposing edifice of the Stonewall Jackson Hotel: Above. Staunton is very hilly, in fact the city itself is over 1300 feet above sea level. Here we look down the hill from the intersection of South Market and Greenville Ave. to the New Street and Greenville Ave. intersection, where we spy a "Peeping Tom" along the way: Below.     photos by Stan Deatherage

Visiting the town of Staunton was definitely an unexpected treat and a feast for the eyes if you enjoy the unique architecture of old buildings. I would love to go back any time we are near there. The drive along the road there was absolutely beautiful with the pastoral scenery of one dairy farm after another.
