The Anatomy of a Sunset: Washington, NC - June 25, 2019 | Eastern North Carolina Now

And just like that, the fireworks in the sky began; regardless of the fact that a big bank of clouds still covered the setting sun, covered the sun to the extent that we never saw any piece of it again, save what it took to illuminate the sky so brilliantly. Against all odds, it was the prescription for the perfect summer sunset.

If these sunset images seem too fantastic, I can only attest that I have not altered these images through any means afforded by a graphic arts program. These images are as real as they actually were as I witnessed them: Above and below.     photos by Stan Deatherage     Click image to enlarge.

The truth of the matter in the successful collecting and making images like this is simply: You just have to be there.

Looking up river toward Washington's Harbor, one senses the surreal beauty of the former and the present in glorious living colors. The colors of these views of about 3 minutes apart exhibit very subtle changes: Above and below.     photos by Stan Deatherage     Click image to enlarge.

Being where the adventure of discovering beauty is an undertaking but worth that effort for discovery.

Looking toward the darkening trestle as the sun sets far below the cloud banked horizon: Above. While turning and looking back up river at Washington harbor; the colors, uncannily, are still brilliant: Below.     photos by Stan Deatherage     Click image to enlarge.
