Oz the Great and Powerful | Eastern North Carolina Now

    The hapless trio compatriots find the lair of Glinda, played by Michelle Williams, who also played the magician's female interest, Annie, back in Kansas, discovered the essential good of Glinda, and scrapped the plan to accomplish the bad bidding of Evanora.
The well intended realm of Glinda's father, who was once king of this incredible land had devolved into one where even the good witches were just one step ahead of the flying baboons: Above. To escape the malevolent monkeys, Glinda instinctively employed her best tested conveyance - the flying bubble: Below.     The politics of all manner of witches, deposed kings, untested wizards, loyal accomplices, flying baboons; notwithstanding, the film was a visually stunning minor masterpiece in story, and image, of a bizarre land that is equally beautiful and dangerous. Director Sam Raimi tenuously constructed this tale writ large in celluloid, and while it could never replace the iconic "Wizard of Oz," the film well supports that film's purpose as well as the literary intentions of creator L.Frank Baum.

    Is the film violent? Most definitely, but so was the original. This effort may appear a bit more violent, if for no other reason than the fact that this film dispensed of the Flying Monkeys in favor of the Flying Baboons. That was enough for me to see the film. What will be your reason?

    Rated PG, released in theaters March 8, 2013, 130 minutes of runtime.
