Golf Tournament Returns To Raise Funds for Scholarships | Eastern North Carolina Now

    WASHINGTON, N.C.     The Beaufort County Community College Foundation-Nutrien 27th Annual Invitational Golf Tournament for Scholarships will take place at Cypress Landing Golf Club on September 10 to support students at the college through scholarships. The tournament has already attracted six women's teams out of a total of 23 teams. Additional teams can still enter the tournament.

    The BCCC Foundation is continuing to raise funds for student scholarships, using the funds to provide qualifying students with textbooks. Their mission complements the Beaufort Promise program that uses existing and new federal and state funds to offer free tuition and fees to qualifying students. The BCCC Foundation hopes to raise enough funds in the coming years to continue the Beaufort Promise program after the program expires in 2023.

    This year will feature six teams in the women's flight, and the tournament can accommodate up to 30 teams. Teams from area high schools may also participate. The tournament consists of a four-person super ball format with teams pre-flighted based on each golfer's handicap. The foundation did not hold a tournament in 2020 due to public health concerns.

    Lee Chevrolet is sponsoring a hole-in-one contest where the winner has a chance to win a vehicle. Coca-Cola is also a major sponsor, providing beverages for the event.

    The tournament is one of the largest annual fundraising events for the BCCC Foundation. On October 9 the BCCC Foundation will hold the Celebrating Hope Dinner and Auction featuring The Pamlico Sound Machine at the Washington Civic Center. Tickets are available now.

    In the past year, the BCCC Foundation awarded $160,000 in scholarships to students. Additionally, it managed funds from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, Governor's Emergency Relief (GEER) Fund, and the Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation Firefighter Retention and Recruitment Scholarship, of which the federal CARES Act was by far the most substantial. The BCCC Foundation helped students access at total of $562,000 in aid, helping them stay on track with their education during an unprecedented crisis.

    The enthusiasm for the Beaufort Promise has been unprecedented. Applications at the college have surged over previous years, with many new students needing just a few classes to complete degrees. The Beaufort Promise program can also retrain employees in healthcare and transportation, helping local employers fill critical positions. The college hopes to keep stoking the local economy by continuing the program beyond 2023.

"Donations and local support continue to make an impact and difference in the lives of many students throughout all of the communities we serve."
