Non-conservatives often do try to use the word "conservative". Tillis and McConnell are examples of that. These days, it is best to look at specific policies rather than an overall label. When one does that, Stan Deatherage has supported conservative principles down the line on gun rights, spending and taxes, election integrity, illegal immigration, and just about any issue one can think of. On the other hand, Frankie Waters has supported the liberal position on each of those issues and more.

I don't mean to come off as too professorial, but, obviously, many Republicans that latch on to the "Conservative" label or brand without actually knowing anything about what it means to be Conservative, and to vote Conservative, whether it is for the Right candidate, or what to expect as to what real Conservative political leaders truly are like, and how we must represent what we consider to be our real Conservative constituents' interests.
I do wish Republicans that clearly are NOT Conservatives would stop attributing that word to themselves in such a willy-nilly manner. It just ain't fitt'n'. So how do we correct this? In short education; educating others as to what is real, because here in Beaufort County that is sorely lacking, especially in what passes as the local GOP Executive Committee. There is just so much tripe emanating from that environment where a party that I helped to fundamentally build is becoming more like a chamber of commerce construct, fraught with petty shallowness, and this total lack of a sense of what is the true mission - to survive as a Constitutional Republic. This concept is totally lost on them as a group, and it fundamentally saddens me.

Rev. Wortman's religious background may mean she sees conservatism only through the lens of social issue conservatism. She may not comprehend what a fiscal conservative is. She clearly does not understand the conservative approach to taxing and spending.
On our present county commission, we only have two strong fiscal conservatives, Stan Deatherage and Hood Richardson. On the other end of the spectrum are the three spendthrifts who vote in lockstep to keep taxes high with their overspending - Frankie Waters, Ed Booth, and Jerry Langley. They are three peas in a left wing pod on spending. The other two commissioners vacillate back and forth on spending issues, sometimes voting as fiscal conservatives and sometimes as spendthrifts. Longtime Republican Congressman Walter Jones was mentioned earlier, and he was cut from the same cloth on budget votes as Deatherage and Richardson. In representing our district, he was a very strong fiscal conservative, and he routinely voted against any budget that overspent, and that was almost every budget. There were times that RINO Speaker Boehner would do a budget deal with Obama and twist arms of Republicans to vote for it, but Walter Jones always said NO and voted for the taxpayers, not the swamp. Deatherage and Richardson have the same backbone on spending issues. We need more like them. Hopefully Tandy Dunn will put spendthrift Frankie Waters out to pasture.

Obviously, there are uninformed voters that do not know the difference between conservatives and RINOs. I would suggest the reading of the republican party platform and then determine if County commissioners (republicans) vote according to the ethical, moral standards of the party. Jyst because a person is registered as a republican, does not mean he/she adheres to the party platform. The person suggesting that Commissioners Richardson and Deatherage are not conservative obviously do not k iw the meaning of CONSERVATIVE. I challenge everyone to attend a commissioners mtg. And listen to certain commissioners that are opposed to investigating the number of illegals in BC and the cost to the tax payers. And, speaking about commissioners with derision, that believe the border should be closed in order to control fentanyl and drug dealers should be put in jail as a means if curtailing substance abuse. I thought true republucans believed in border security and drug dealers going to jail.

Donna, I had the mistaken impression you were a conservative, but your comment opened my eyes. The biggest RINO on the county commission is Frankie Waters, a longtime Democrat who was apparently recruited to switch parties just before his first election and run as a fake Republican in what the Democrats call their "super sleepers". He has voted like a Democrat ever since he has been on the commission. Real Republicans do not vote for a budget that overspends and / or overtaxes whether it is in Washington, DC, Raleigh, or here. Walter Jones was a great conservative in Congress who made it his trademark to vote against bad budgets, even upsetting RINO House leadership to do so.

DONNA, I AM NOT OBLIGATED TO VOTE ON ANYTHING THAT IS NOT JUSTIFIED, IS A HANDOUT TO OTHER COMMISIONERS BUDDIES, IS A WASTE OF MONEY OR IS FRAUDLENT. THE COUNTY BUDGET IS FAT WITH WASTE AND POOR COMMISSIONER MANAGEMENT AND ACCOUTTABILITY. I GET THE IMPRESSION THAT MS WORTMAN BELIELVES IT IS GO ALONG AND GET ALONG BECAUSE SOME MYSTICAL LEADER HAS TOLD US WHAT TO DO. THAT IS HOW THE DEMOCRATS DO IT.

Donna Wortman, at least some of us have to be fully honest, with full working brains, to balance all the others out.
That is just the real of it. Why do you think Hood and Stan get elected and re-elected all these many terms? In fact, one of my greatest ambitions here on this, the largest online publication in the history of this immediate region, is to help others, in this Representative Republic, to also be "fully honest and with full working brains." Only then, can we all win with a smarter, more honest electorate to elect far wiser elected officials.

I find it interesting that you’re supposedly
A Republican but yet are seen here “skinning” another one. We’re hoping that the 2 usually fake “conservative” commissioners who don’t vote for budgets and how to spend our money aka Hood, Stan will be voted out 22&24. These 2 are true fakes and are a poison to our county government.

It should be up to each of us where our money is donated. I find no reason to donated to any of the charities listed any longer since my money is already being donated to them by way of my taxes.
I do find it interesting that the county commissioners are giving to charities but yet the Beaufort County Animal Shelter is constantly asking for donations for food, cleaning supplies, money for a new sign, etc. Why cannot the county any longer supply food to feed the animals in its care? Sept. 12, they received donations of food from a drive held at Tractor Supply, quote from AC "We now have plenty of food for out shelter babies!" Aug 31 "The shelter is in desperate need of large breed dog food!" Aug 31 asking for donations of pelletized bedding that they use for cat litter. Aug. 18 the shelter was asking for donations of wet puppy food, dry dog food, hand towels, low splash bleach and dog houses. I could continue but you get the idea. At one time the county provided food for the animals, cat litter, cleaning supplies, etc. Why have they stopped doing this?
