Governor McCrory Touts Furniture Market's Impact During Visit | Eastern North Carolina Now

Governor Pat McCrory praised the economic and cultural impact of the Fall 2014 High Point Market today during a visit to the furniture exposition.

    High Point, N.C. - Governor Pat McCrory praised the economic and cultural impact of the Fall 2014 High Point Market today [October 20th] during a visit to the furniture exposition.

    "The High Point Market is more than a trade show," Governor McCrory said. "With its colorful history and economic benefits, it's become part of North Carolina's culture and has made High Point the furniture capital of the world."

    The governor toured the Klaussner Home Furnishings and Vanguard Furniture Co. showrooms, at 101 North Hamilton Street and 301 North Hamilton Street, respectively. During his visit he spoke to Bill Wittenberg, president and CEO, Klaussner Home Furnishings, John Bray, CEO, Vanguard Furniture and Doug Bassett, Chairman of the Board of Directors, High Point Market Authority and President, Vaughan Bassett Furniture.

    The fall market is expected to attract approximately 75,000 visitors, of which 10 percent will be from international destinations. The show is expected to have 2,000 exhibitors.

    A 2013 Duke University study found that the High Point Market generates more than $5.39 billion in economic impact to regional economy and supports 37,616 jobs. The economic activity generated by the market provides North Carolina approximately $123 million in tax revenue annually, according to the Duke study.

    The Duke report also found that despite globalization, the furniture industry remains a critical source of jobs in North Carolina and an important source of tax revenue for state and local governments. The market is the key event for the furniture economic sector and includes a range of activities from manufacturing, to distribution, to design, marketing and professional services.
