    Sunday, July 3      Amazing Acrobats!      3 p.m.

     Hummingbirds are one of the Earth’s most amazing flying creatures. Come and enjoy this one-hour program with a ranger as we learn how these tiny acrobats of the bird world not only survive, but thrive! Also learn how to attract them to your yard and have an opportunity to view them up close!


     Saturday, July 11       Prescribed Fire      3 p.m.

    Fire can be a devastating, destructive force. But not all things about fire are negative. Come and discover the positive uses nature has for fire. There will be a presentation on prescribed burning followed by a short hike to view recently burned areas of Goose Creek State Park. Meet in the Environmental Education and Visitor Center for this hour-long program. Dress appropriately and bring sunscreen and bug spray!

    Sunday, July 17       Eastern Box Turtle       3 p.m.

    Did you know that the Eastern Box Turtle is our state reptile? Did you also know that it can live up to 50 years in the wild? Come to this one-hour ranger led program and learn more about this fascinating reptile. We will meet in the Auditorium of the Visitor Center.

    Sunday, July 24       American Alligator       3 p.m.

    What reptile can be dated back 200 million years? From the large jaws to the powerful tail used for swimming, the American Alligator is a captivating and mysterious inhabitant of North Carolina’s waters. Though this elusive and feared reptile is seldom seen in Beaufort County, join a ranger in Goose Creek’s Visitor Center to discover more about the amazing Alligator.


nbsp;   Sunday, July 31       Bats       3 p.m.

    Bats are one of nature’s most intriguing animals. The insect pests that we dislike so much are a bat’s main course. One bat can eat as many as 3,000 insects a night. Just think of how many mosquitoes that could be! Come to this one-hour program and discover more about these flying mammals and learn some ways to attract these beneficial critters to your yard.

    Goose Creek State Park's Annual Photography Contest Is Back!!!

    Have you been out on our trails already this year and taken some really neat photos? If so, choose your best to enter in our photo contest. If not, come on out, stop by the office to pick up an entry form (or three), then get out there and capture the winning photo!


2011 Photo Contest Rules


• All photos must have been taken in the park this calendar year and must be accompanied by an official entry form. Each contestant is limited to 3 entries. Contest deadline is December 18, 2011.
• Prints no larger than 8"x10" must be submitted for judging. Be prepared to submit electronic copies for contest winning photographs.
• Framed, matted or digitally manipulated photos (other than simple cropping and brightness/contrast adjustments) are not eligible.
• Employees of the North Carolina Division of State Parks and are not eligible.
• All photos must reflect safe, ethical, and legal behavior. Do not harass wildlife to get a photo.
• Mail or bring your entry to:
