Governor McCrory Announces Appointments | Eastern North Carolina Now

News Release:

    Raleigh, N.C.     The Office of Governor Pat McCrory announced the following appointments today:

    U.S.S. North Carolina Battleship Commission

        •  The Honorable Sandra Ray (New Hanover County) - Ray was appointed chair.

        •  Robert S. Cooley, Jr. (New Hanover County) - Cooley was appointed vice-chair.

    The Battleship Commission adopts rules and regulations for proper maintenance and operation of the ship as permanent memorial and exhibit. Members work with the Department of Cultural Resources to manage and maintain exhibits, activities and records pertaining to marine and naval history of North Carolina and the United States.

    Blount Street Historic District Oversight Committee

        •  Dr. Phillip Matthews (Wake County) - Matthews is a former Wake County Commissioner, fire fighter, and served on the Garner City Council for eight years. He was Wake County Board Chairman in 2014. Matthews is a Vietnam veteran, retired Army Officer and Life Member of VFW and American Legion.

        •  Elizabeth McClean (Wake County) - McLean is a sales consultant with the Raleigh office of Carolina Business Interiors (CBI, NC) doing sales and new business development. From July 2014 - July 2015 she worked for the state Office of Information Technology Services working on statewide IT initiatives, communications, and all things iCenter. She graduated from Meredith College in 2008 with a degree in political science and history.

    The purpose of the committee is to monitor the implementation of the act regarding the sale of state-owned property in the Blount Street Historic District.

    Edenton Historical Commission

        •  J. Dawson Tyler, Jr. (Chowan County) - Tyler is a senior account executive at Tyler Technologies, Inc. in Edenton. He is responsible for the company's presence in Illinois and Georgia.

    The commission affects and encourages preservation, restoration and appropriate presentation of the Town of Edenton and Chowan County as a historic, educational and aesthetic place to benefit the citizens of the place and the state.

    Governor's Task Force on Safer Schools

        •  Richard W. Parks (Nash County) - Officer Parks has spent 22 years in law enforcement, all in Nash County. He has actively supported many organizations including My Sister's House, Reach Out Rocky Mount, Kids 4 Change, Young Professionals Network, and the Governor's Youth Advisory Council.

    The purpose of the task force is to provide guidance to the Center for Safer Schools and to consider future policy and legislative action that is needed to improve school safety in North Carolina.

    North Carolina Geographic Information Coordinating Council

        •  Douglas J. Newcomb (Alamance County) - Newcomb is a cartographer and IT specialist for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. He has been with the USFWS for more than 17 years and previously worked as a hydrologist and computer specialist for the United States Geological Survey.

    The North Carolina Geographic Information Coordinating Council is established to develop policies regarding the utilization of geographic information, GIS systems, and other related technologies.

    North Carolina Food Manufacturing Task Force

        •  The Honorable Steve Troxler (Guilford County)

        •  The Honorable John Skvarla (Moore County)

        •  Valee Taylor (Orange County)

        •  Peter Travers Daniel (Wake County)

        •  Dan Gerlach (Nash County)

        •  John Prestage (Sampson County)

        •  William Randle (Guilford County)

        •  Martez Hill (Wake County)

        •  David Clark (Caldwell County)

        •  Charles K. Gaither, Jr. (Henderson County)

        •  Jimmy Gentry (Iredell County)

        •  Bobby G. Ham (Greene County)

        •  Jenny Fulton (Forsyth County)

        •  Karl Delly (South Carolina)

        •  Thomas Holt (Wake County)

        •  Jeffery Turner (Duplin County)

        •  Paul Meyer (Wake County)

        •  Christopher Chung (Wake County)

        •  Dennis V. Berwyn (Wake County)

        •  Kevin Leonard (Vance County)

        •  Vance C. Dalton (Iredell County)

        •  The Honorable Nicholas J. Tennyson (Durham County)

        •  James P. Cain (Wake County)

    The task force shall be composed of individuals who are collectively experienced in agriculture, poultry production, beef production, pork production, dairy production, crop production, agribusiness, food processing, food packaging, transportation, education, government and economic development.
