News Release:

      Saturday, June 4, 2016       National Trails Day Hike       10:00 am

    To celebrate National Trails Day a ranger will be leading a leisurely one-mile hike along the Pamlico River and out to Mallard Creek. The hike will highlight large live oak trees draped in Spanish moss, a mixed hardwood forest carpeted with a lush grassy understory and scenic stops along the water’s edge. Please meet the ranger at the swim beach parking lot.

      Friday, June 10, 2016       Funyaking       10:00 am

    Meet at the swim beach and learn how to kayak by playing games. This program is for ages 10-18 years old. Space is limited, so registration is required. Please call the park at (252) 923-2191 to register. Wear clothes and shoes you do not mind getting wet. Bring a towel and wear sunscreen.

      Saturday, June 11, 2016       Flatty Creek Trail Hike       10:00 am

    Hike through upland forests that incorporates sections of boardwalk that cross wetlands. Meet at the entrance to the campground.

      Friday, June 17, 2016       Campfire Cooking       5:00 pm

    Increase your camping skills and savor a meal cooked over the campfire. Meet at the Campground Amphitheater. Bring a camp chair and something to drink. Space is limited, so registration is required. Please call the park at (252) 923-2191 to register. All ages are welcome.

      Saturday, June 18, 2016       Intro to Kayaking       11:00 am

    Meet at Dinah’s Landing boat ramp to learn the basics of kayaking such as paddling, entering and exiting the boat and safety precautions. After the class we will explore Goose Creek. Space is limited, so registration is required. Please call the park at (252) 923-2191 to register. Wear clothes that you do not mind getting wet, shoes that strap on and sunscreen.

      Saturday, June 25, 2016       A Beginner’s Guide to Fishing       10:00 am

    Have you ever wanted to go fishing but didn’t know quite how to begin? This program will cover everything from fishing regulations, the types of fish caught in the area, tackle, bait and basic fishing knots. Please meet at the park’s visitor center.

      Sunday, July 3, 2016       Introduction to Goose Creek State Park       10:00 am

    A power point presentation will be given that features the natural communities and recreation opportunities found in the park. Meet in the visitor center.

      Friday, July 8, 2016       Outdoor Cooking Potluck       5:00 pm

    In this program, we will combine a few ways to cook food outdoors with charcoal, fire and gas. Meet at the Campground Amphitheater and partake in a delicious dinner. Space is limited, so registration is required. Please call the park at (252) 923-2191 to register.

      Saturday, July 9, 2016       Bicycle Road Tour of the Park       10:00 am

    Join a ranger for a tour and discussion of areas of the park via bicycle. All riders must wear a helmet. We hope to see a variety of wildlife and learn of future developments. Meet at the visitor center parking lot with your bicycles.

      Saturday, July 16, 2016       Totally Turtles       10:00 am

    Can you guess North Carolina’s state reptile? I’ll give you a hint, it’s a turtle. Meet at the park’s visitor center to discover some of the unique turtles living throughout eastern North Carolina. There will be live turtles showcased throughout the program.

      Friday, July 22, 2016       Kayak/Canoe Camping Skills       10:00 am – 12:00 noon

    Bring your camping gear and learn how to prepare, pack and go on a camping trip. Also learn about some camping opportunities in the area. Even if you don’t have any camping gear, please come. Space is limited, so registration is required. Please call the park at (252) 923-2191 to register. We will pack a boat, learn some safety measures and paddle across Goose Creek. Meet at the Dinah’s Landing boat ramp. Dress in your paddling clothing, wear sunscreen and shoes that strap on.

      Sunday, July 24, 2016       Discovery Room       10:00 am

    Bring the kids to check out our taxidermy mounts in the Discovery Room and learn about the animals that call Goose Creek State Park home. Meet in the visitor center.

      Saturday, July 30, 2016       Fish Frenzy       10:00 am

    Meet at the swim beach for a chance to fish the brackish waters of the Pamlico River. This program is for ages 6 and up. We will practice casting, baiting a hook and hopefully taking fish off the hooks. This will be a catch and release program. Fishing license are not required for the program. Space is limited, so registration is required. Please call the park at (252) 923-2191 to register. All equipment will be provided, however, feel free to bring your own. Wear clothes and shoes you do not mind getting wet and sunscreen.

      Saturday, August 6, 2016       Snakes Alive       10:00 am

    Expand your knowledge on local snakes by attending this fun and informative program. We will cover snake identification tips, traits and behaviors, and tips on how to live side by side with one of nature’s most misunderstood creatures. There will be live snakes throughout the program. Meet in the visitor center.

      Saturday, August 13, 2016       History Hike       10:00 am

    Learn about the history of the area starting with the establishment of North Carolina’s first town on this interpretive hike of Live Oak Trail. Meet in the last parking lot.

      Saturday, August 20, 2016       Plant Wars       10:00 am

    Do you have plants taking over an area of your yard or pond? Come to the visitor center to learn some of the common invasive plants and what you can do about it. We will go for a hike to see some of the problem areas within the park. Wear clothes and shoes comfortable for hiking and bug spray.

      Saturday, August 27, 2016       Flatty Creek Hike       10:00 am

    Meet at the campground parking lot to enjoy a relaxing half mile hike out to Flatty Creek. This area of the park is part of a National Natural Landmark which was established due to the diverse ecosystems. Feel free to bring bottled water, sunscreen and bug spray.
