17th East Carolina Wildlife Arts Festival and North Carolina Decoy Carving Championships Schedule Announced | Eastern North Carolina Now

    Washington, NC - The 17th Annual East Carolina Wildlife Arts Festival and North Carolina Decoy Carving Championships will be held in Washington, North Carolina February 10-12, 2012. Events of the annual festival will be held in various locations throughout Washington.

    Highlights of the 2012 event include: DockDogsŽ Competition, unveiling of the 2012 NC Waterfowl Stamp, 15 carving competition divisions, Kidz Zone childrenšs activities, Southern Classic Duck, Goose and Swan Calling Championships, and over 150 exhibitors offering fine, collectible artwork. Tickets for the event are $10 for a day pass or $15 for the weekend. Tickets will be available at each venue.

    Since the first year, the ECWAF has celebrated and showcased the art involved with North Carolinašs wildlife and waterfowl heritage. The Festival now includes more than 150 artists and exhibitors from across the country. Many of those are award-winning artists. Beyond art, Festival attendees will find carving tools and accessories, and provisions to support the sportsmanšs quest. The artists are just one component of this ever-growing Festival.

    Carving Competition ­ The heart and soul of the ECWAF, the Carving Competition attracts elite carvers from the US and Canada. This year 13 divisions, including the International Waterfowl Carvers Association Competition, are on the books for judging. Depending on the Division, carvings are judged for floatability, realistic appearance, and craftsmanship. The Carving Competition will be held at the Redmenšs Lodge and will be open to the public Saturday and Sunday.

    DockDogs ­ As seen on ESPN, DockDogs returns as one of the most highly anticipated components of the ECWAF. Competitions are open to the public on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Kugler Field. Using the Splash Super Pool dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds will compete in Big Air, Speed Retrieve, and Extreme Vertical competitions.

    Southern Classic Duck, Goose & Swan Calling Competition ­ The Classic will be held on the Oakland Stage on Stewart Parkway and Respess Street. This year, the Classic is formatted to promote four championships: 1) North Carolina State Duck Calling Championship, the winner of which will represent North Carolina at the World Championships in Stuttgart, Arkansas. 2) North Carolina State Goose Calling Championship. 3) World Swan Calling Championship. 4) Pamlico Regional Duck Calling Championship. Registration for the Classic begins at 8 AM on Saturday. Divisions include Junior Duck, Junior Goose, and Junior Swan. Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded. Past winners have been male and female of all ages.

    North Carolina Waterfowl Conservation Stamp Competition ­ The ECWAF hosts the state of North Carolinašs Waterfowl Conservation Stamp Competition. The competition presented by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission was developed to generate revenue for waterfowl conservation in the state. The program has raised more than $4.2 million since its inception. Annually five species/habitats are specified for the competition. Thirty-two pieces of artwork were submitted by artists from across the country. The top five will be revealed and showcased through the ECWAF.

    Several thousand people are expected to come to Washington, North Carolina, to compete in the various competitions, purchase wildlife related items and to enjoy the overall Southern hospitality.
