This week, Barbara Ferrer, the Los Angeles County Public Health Director, announced that all attendees for Super Bowl LVI, to be held at SoFi stadium, will be given KN95 masks and must wear masks unless they are eating or drinking.

Ferrer also noted that fans will be consistently reminded to wear their masks.

"Fans heading to the NFL Experience at the LA Convention Center, the NFL's 'interactive football theme park' launching the week ahead of the February 13 Super Bowl, will receive free take-home test kits 'with messaging to test before the big game,' said Ferrer," CNN reported, adding, "She said the NFL anticipates distributing over 60,000 test kits. The county will set up vaccination sites at the NFL Experience and anyone receiving first, second, or a booster dose of vaccine will be given free entry to the event."

    NFL Communications stated:

Fans who are not fully vaccinated need to provide proof of a recent negative test result to enter the South Hall Lobby of the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The negative test must have been taken 24 hours if rapid antigen test or 48 hours if PCR and is required for anyone ages two (2) and older.

Anyone not vaccinated that has tested positive for COVID-19 within 90 days, will still need proof of negative test to enter.

Fans arriving to receive a booster dose will be able to enter with proof of their full vaccination status.

    Ferrer stated:

Our partnership with the NFL allows people to come together safely and experience the very best of American football. Straightforward public health measures including vaccinations, testing, masking and hand hygiene make it possible for so many to enjoy the Super Bowl Experience. We thank the NFL and all the fans for taking care of each other throughout the football season and look forward to welcoming everyone to an extraordinary Super Bowl in beautiful Los Angeles.

California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly added:

California is excited to host this year's Super Bowl and welcome fans from across the country to the Golden State. We are working closely with the NFL and Los Angeles County to ensure COVID-19 mitigation strategies are in place that allow people to enjoy this important event safely. t is equally important that we all continue to take steps to protect ourselves and our friends and families as we enjoy the game and the surrounding events, whether it be at the game, at home or in our community.

"As part of the county's restrictions, if anyone refuses to wear a mask after being told by facility [staff] the offense could carry a $250 fine," The Daily Mail noted.

In April 2021, Ferrer was asked about critics saying a medical doctor should be running L.A. County Health and not someone with a PhD in social welfare policy. She answered, "I do have years of running a public health department in Boston, a fairly significant city ..."
