France's Freedom Convoys started from many places and arrived in different groups instead of one large convoy. That tactic seems to have helped many of them break through police lines and enter Paris. President Macron had deployed 7,000 extra gendarmes, hundreds of armored cars, barricades, and tow trucks, demanding that the Freedom Convoy stay out of the city. As the convoy arrived, the police made liberal use of tear gas, which often enveloped uninvolved bystanders as well, including families having lunch at sidewalk cafes. In some cases, the tear gas seemed to be deliberately fired at the cafes, and children were among those gassed. Police were also beating protesters. Individual Parisians were turning out in droves to support the Freedom Convoy.

Macron faces an election in a few months, and this may be his Waterloo.

The best outcome of the first round of the French election would be a runoff between the two strongly anti-immigration candidates, Marine LePen and Eric Zemmour. Either would be a great president.

Countrygirl, looking at current French polls, it is not likely that France will go to anyone to the left of Macron, as the next three candidates are solidly to his right. Running a close second is the candidate of the traditional conservative Les Republicains, followed by two populist / nationalist right candidates, with LePen's National Rally in third place and the new anti-immigration Reconquest Party in fourth place. Both of the populist / nationalist right presidential candidates have strongly attacked Macron for his heavy handed approach to the protests. LePen accused Macron of using armored cars to launch his campaign.
As to the gassing, video has now emerged showing Macron's police firing tear gas into the interior of a French restaurant where families with children were eating. |

Gassing little kids and families that are eating is outrageous and below low life. I pray that Macron is out and they don't elect someone worse.
