Didn’t your momma teach you better? | Eastern North Carolina Now

Tom Campbell
People are weary of the angry, hateful rhetoric and violence and many have just tuned out any political or current event discussions. It's just better not to hear it, they say, than to have to deal with it.

If you don't believe that today's rhetoric has escalated beyond the pale, just ask a politician, teacher, newsperson, election official, medical professional or columnist. Better still, ask salesclerks, fast-food workers - just about anyone who deals with the public. They will tell you stories about face-to-face threats and insults, ugly intimidating cell or email messages, sometimes even aggressive and abusive actions they've endured. We seem to believe we can say anything we want, directed to anyone we choose, using any language we desire.

We recently came home to discover the rear driver's side window of our car had been smashed. Glass was lying all over the ground and inside the car. This couldn't have been done by a bird or a pebble kicked up from a mower. It was pure and simple vandalism, just like the long string of mailboxes we recently saw destroyed along a neighborhood street. They are not just "teenage pranks."

When did we lose our civility? What happened to the socially acceptable manners and language we were taught? I would love to ask some of these ill-behaved men and women (yes, most are adults), "didn't your momma teach you any better than this?"

My folks also taught us about restraint, and when we didn't practice restraint, we learned the repercussions from not behaving in acceptable ways. Like it or not there are repercussions to the intemperate words and actions we see all too frequently.

There is a scripted playbook for those, often politicians, who want power and money. They start by complaining about how they - and imply you, also - are a victim, discriminated against or even persecuted. Next, they tell you who is to blame for your miserable lot in life. The oppressor-to-be then cleverly makes you afraid of these ugly people, frequently employing the replacement theory, telling you that this boogeyman wants to displace you and put themselves in your rightful place. The playbook next calls for frequent loud messages ratcheting up the severity, anger and hate. We have witnessed how these tactics work in collecting disciples. Before you realize it, a movement has begun. And we know too well that movements, once rolling, are hard to stop. It isn't a big leap for this hate speech, now ramped up to fever pitch, to demand or imply that action is needed.

January 6th is the prime example of the results of this strategy, as was the attack on Nancy Pelosi's husband, the attempted kidnapping of Governor Gretchen Whitmer and many other notable examples.

History records the evolution of these wannabe autocrats and oppressors. In times past, good people would rise up, speak out and turn away these haters. What is puzzling is our response to them today. Why are we unable or unwilling to stop these wrongful movements before they go too far? I know we believe in free speech, even when we think it wrong or harmful and it's not good manners to meet ugliness with ugliness. We want to believe these are trends that will peter out. And you know, it might hurt my chances for promotion, be bad for business or make my friends and neighbors upset. So, we remain quiet.

But our silence is interpreted as either complicit agreement or, at least, neutrality. New Yorker and self-proclaimed "thousandaire" George Hahn recently said in a podcast, "if you remain neutral in the face of injustice you have chosen the side of the oppressor." He boldly proclaimed that we must decide to draw a line on disrespectful, demonizing, hate speech by strong protests and opposition to oppression - and make no mistake, oppression is just what this is.

When good people keep quiet the bullying continues, the attacks become bolder and the stakes become larger. When an NBC poll revealed 71 percent believe America is moving in the wrong direction that's one thing. But it's quite another when 30 percent believe that violence against our country can be justified, as a recent Washington Post/University of Maryland poll revealed. Chants like "lock her up" become January 6th insurrections. And all of this amped up rhetoric and violence might explain why 43 percent believe a civil war will erupt in the next decade, according to an Economist/YouGov poll.

When will we draw the line? When will the silent majority say "enough." I pray it happens before it is too late.

In a 1946 speech, Eleanor Roosevelt spoke about Hitler's rise, "I have the feeling that we let our consciences realize too late the need of standing up against something that we knew was wrong. We have therefore had to avenge it, but we did nothing to prevent it. I hope that in the future, we are going to remember that there can be no compromise at any point with the things that we know are wrong."

poll#165
In light of continued developments, primarily since 2008, there exists in these United States a Legal System which operates on a proved Two Tiered approach to justice rendered, which primarily benefits Democratic Elites and Woke Ideological Virtue Signalers, representing their co-dependent wards, to the expressed exclusion of normal hardworking American citizens: What is your suggestion in remedying this widespread injustice and, if not corrected, its existential outcome for our Constitutional Republic?
Complete overhaul of the Department of Justice and their enforcers - the FBI - to reflect a far more honest justice system to keep patriots remaining calm.
Disband the FBI, and request that congress investigate all unethical and non patriotic practices to partially right the wrongs of a distrusted and politically weaponized "Department of Justice."
Continue with the current system since the two tiered justice system has been so remarkably beneficial to Democratic Socialist political hegemony; chronic distrust in institutions notwithstanding.

Inarguably, the policies of the Democrats in congress and Joe Biden as the Executive is plunging the United States into a recession, if we are not already there; a recession that was completely avoidable. Will abrupt changes in policies occur in time?
Yes, the Democrats have a bold plan, yet to be revealed, to save us.
No, there will have to be a complete undoing of the damage done by these Democrats.
I can't do simple math, so how am I to understand the concept of basic economics.

It is sad that either way you look at it Make America God's Again or Make America Great Again, that so many people are against it and had prefer to see America under Satan's control and to fail.

By the way, tonight Frankie Waters accused me and my constituents of being part of the MAGA movement. That was a first coming from a so-called Republican.

Campbell is little more than a mouthpiece for the Democrat narrative but he is a slicker wordsmith than Biden's speech writers. This is the "dark Brandon" Philadelphia speech rewritten where it may take in people without their realizing it. He talks a lot of generalities that could apply to both sides, talks out of both sides of his mouth on free speech, and in doing so draws more poople in. Instead of openly blasting "Republican", "mega MAGA" or whatever, he sets his partisan trap by only condeming things that the left blames on Republicans (although in reality those were NOT Republican orchestrated). Campbell's more subtle way of attacking Republicans is more seducing than Biden's "in your face" attacks. Campbell's partisan attack is the same as Biden's just written in a more tricky fashion.

Democrats always tend to accuse Republicans of what they themselves are doing, in this case, acting like fascists. One hallmark of fascism is the "corporate state" where government and big companies work together on political objectives. I cannot think of a more apt example of the corporate state than what is happening today with big corporations parroting the Democrat political line on so many subjects and the collusiion between Big Tech and Big Government to suppress our free speech.

Good and true points John Steed: Tom really abandoned all wisdom in this report, which leads me to continue to believe that the core of the Left will never understand a wakening American public that is going to have to get far smarter, and fast.

Unlike Tom, I consider it my job here at ENC NOW to help in that awakening to the light of intellectual thought, while Tom just wants to keep them "Woke".

As usual, leftie loon Tom Campbell presents the "woke" side of events. He parrots the left's talking points about Jan. 6 and the attack on Pelosi's husband (which was by an illegal alien who was a nudist activist and BLM supporter). We had a shooting into the home of a Republican congressional candidate in our own state, narrowly missing the candidate's two young daughters, but woke Campbell ignores this in his spiel.

The real threat of totalitarianism is by Campbell's own side which is at war with democratic rights like the freedom of speech. They support government power grabs on a wide range of issues. He wants to quote far left Eleanor Roosevelt on the rise of Hitler, but she ignores how Hitler concentrated power in himself, which was by ruling by decree, which is exactly what Biden is doing with his executive orders.

Thank-you Tom for your workman-like, and true presentation of a position that so many Conservatives also have, just a reverse of who the perpetrators are that created this mess that NOW leads so many American citizens to waking up to the fact of such a "wrong track" direction in an America controlled by Democratic Socialists, and their corrupted institutions. Additionally, I warn you and others of the growing reality that the Conservative position in the majority of polls is under represented by about 4%.

The real problem regarding these corrupted institutions is that, while not perfect, they did serve a purpose in giving the public a touchstone to some trust in stability and continuity of the Republic. That now is over for real Americans.

Now, many good patriots believe that these public institutions: the discredited Legacy Media; the weaponized DOJ /FBI; the Politicized CDC; the Failed Education Industry; and the Leftist non patriot Democratic Socialist Party; just to name a few of the systemic obstacles to our Republic's survival, have no reason NOW to exist without, at the minimum, a drastic, and complete overhaul.
