Embattled first son Hunter Biden joined President Joe Biden on his trip to Ireland - a trip that has been touted as part diplomatic and part personal, since a number of Biden's ancestors hail from the Emerald Isle.

The president is expected to visit both County Louth and County Mayo, from whence his own ancestors emigrated in the mid-1800s - and plans to speak publicly later in the week outside Muredach's Cathedral in County Mayo. According to Biden's family history, his great-great-great grandfather Edward Blewitt sold some of the bricks that built that cathedral in order to secure enough money for his family's passage to America.

Biden has also joked about visiting a pub - Finnegan's Pub - with ties to his family, despite the fact that he doesn't drink: "I'm the only Irishman, though, you've ever met who's never had a drink."

It was Biden's travel partner - his son Hunter, who is still the subject of federal investigation - who got critics talking on Twitter, however.

"Hunter Biden is now a full time feature in the White House accompanying his father on state visits like his current trip to Ireland," @amuse tweeted.

"Hunter must be good for business? Gotta take the closer if you want your 10% right? #10forthebigguy," Lance Dudley replied, referencing texts and emails from Hunter Biden's now-infamous laptop.

"Does Hunter not have a job aside from selling his finger-paintings?" Doug Powers asked.

"Look at this. A giant middle finger to the world. I'm just surprised the crackhead is wearing pants," Gerry Callahan added.

Jon Gabriel predicted that Hunter would come back with a new job, tweeting, "Hunter's gonna come back with 170 tons of Lucky Charms and a Guinness distributorship."

"The communists who control Biden know how obscene this looks. That's the point. They want to make clear there are different rules for the regime," came from @thebradfordfile.

"They're rubbing the two tiered justice system in our faces. This is a message," @OilfieldRando said. "If you're with us, you're protected."
