New WaPo/ABC News Poll Shows Trump With Commanding Lead Over Biden | Eastern North Carolina Now

    A new poll could signal trouble for President Joe Biden as former President Donald Trump holds a big lead in a hypothetical head-to-head.

    The Washington Post-ABC News poll has Trump, the GOP frontrunner, with a ten percentage point lead over Biden among registered voters, at 52% to 42%, well beyond the 3.5 percentage point margin of error. Biden's approval rating on top issues for voters, including the economy and immigration, shows the president faces an uphill battle in 2024 over topics far beyond his age.

    "The latest ABC/Washington Post Poll has Trump beating Biden by 10% and they are desperately scrambling trying to call it an 'outlier,'" chair of the House Republican Conference, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), posted on X. "It's not an outlier. The elitist Left and their stenographers in the mainstream media should talk to more voters across America. President Trump has historic support in Upstate New York and all across the country!"

    The Post described the results as an "outlier." According to the RealClearPolitics average of polls, Trump holds a 1.1 percentage point lead over Biden. Of the twelve most recent polls included in the average, Trump beats Biden in five, while Biden beats Trump in three, and four are ties.

    According to the new WaPo/ABC News poll, the majority of voters, 74%, believe Biden is too old for a second term, up six percentage points from May. Biden's approval rating for the economy, which is consistently at the top of voters' priorities, sits at 30%, despite his administration touting "Bidenomics." His approval on the border issue is a dismal 23%, and the president's overall approval rating is 37%, with 56% disapproval. Trump, who left office with a 38% approval rating, now has a retrospective 48% approval for his performance in the White House, according to ABC.

    The former president also has a commanding lead among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, with 54% supporting his bid for the GOP nomination. His next closest challenger, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, is at 15%, followed by the remainder of the candidates in single digits, the survey found. In May, DeSantis was at 25%, according to The Post.

    Most Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents, 62%, believe the party should nominate someone besides Biden, while just a third support another term for the president. Despite this, Biden is polling well ahead of the two other Democratic candidates, Robert F. Kennedy and self-help author Marianne Williamson.

    As for who the alternative could be, 8% said Vice President Kamala Harris, 8% said Vermont independent Senator Bernie Sanders, 7% said Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, and 20% said "someone else."

    "Left-wing ABC News/WashPost poll has Trump up 10 points (!) over Biden. By comparison, ABC/WP poll from September 2019 had Biden up 15 points," Mollie Hemingway, editor-in-chief at The Federalist, posted to X. "The poll tends to dramatically overstate Democrat support ... its final 2020 poll had Biden up 12, for example."

    Trump touted his poll numbers in his decision to skip the first Republican debate in August, saying, "People know my Record, one of the BEST EVER, so why would I Debate?" The decision appears to have not affected his national poll numbers. Trump will also skip the second GOP debate on Wednesday to give a speech to striking auto workers in Detroit.
