Charles Cline, of Washington, passed away peacefully on Pentecost morning, May 19, 2013. Charlie, as most knew him, was preceded in death by his wife Janie (Mary Jane Anderson Cline) his parents, Robert Carl and Nellie Troutman Cline, and his brothers, Wayne and Robert. He is survived by his dear friend Eileen Posage, his daughter Leigh Cline Poag and her husband Coleman Poag Jr., and his son Larry Wayne Cline and his wife Robie Roberts Cline. He leaves behind five grandchildren: Mary Elizabeth Poag Twiddy, her husband Daniel; Caroline and Laura Poag, and William and Katherine Cline. He is also survived by his brother John Lewis Cline and his sister Alice Cline Ritchie, many nieces and nephews, and many beloved cousins.

Charlie grew up on a dairy farm in Rowan County, N.C., and married Janie on June 3rd, 1957, the afternoon of the same day he graduated from Lenoir Rhyne College. They lived in Hickory for a short time before moving to Charlotte, where Charlie worked as an industrial chemist. In 1973, they moved to Fountain Inn, South Carolina, where Charlie worked for Para-Chem Southern. Upon retirement in 1992, Charlie and Janie retired to Washington, North Carolina. There, they lived out their dream of camping, gardening, and traveling on their beloved sailboat Coquina III.

The church was a large part of Charlie's life, and he passed that legacy of faith on to his children and grandchildren. Charlie was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Washington, where his church family was very important to him. He served on the Congregational Council and Building Committees, and was a passionate supporter of the music ministry of the church.

The funeral service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in Washington on Wednesday, May 22nd at 3:00 PM. There will be a visitation at Hillside Funeral Service, Washington on Tuesday, May 21st from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. The burial will take place at St. Luke's Lutheran Church cemetery on Thursday, May 23rd at 2:00 PM.

The family wishes to thank Pastor Ben Kifer for his support and spiritual guidance. We would also like to thank Dr. David Lewis, and Dr. John Inzerillo, Dr. Robert McLaurin, Nicole DaVia, PA, and all the nurses and staff at the Marion Shepherd Cancer Center for their loving care.
