He is survived by his dear friend Eileen Posage, his daughter Leigh Cline Poag and her husband Coleman Poag Jr., and his son Larry Wayne Cline and his wife Robie Roberts Cline. He leaves behind five grandchildren: Mary Elizabeth Poag Twiddy, her husband Daniel; Caroline and Laura Poag, and William and Katherine Cline. They lived in Hickory for a short time before moving to Charlotte, where Charlie worked as an industrial chemist. In 1973, they moved to Fountain Inn, South Carolina, where Charlie worked for Para-Chem Southern. Upon retirement in 1992, Charlie and Janie retired to Washington, North Carolina. There, they lived out their dream of camping, gardening, and traveling on their beloved sailboat Coquina III.

The church was a large part of Charlie's life, and he passed that legacy of faith on to his children and grandchildren. Charlie was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Washington, where his church family was very important to him.
