Broadsword calling Danny Boy: Earl of Cardigan redux; WASHINGTON (+ 4 and the hook); BROWNS (+1400), LIONS (+750) | Eastern North Carolina Now

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of hell
Rode the six hundred.

Flashed all their sabres bare,
Flashed as they turned in air,
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wondered.
Plunged in the battery-smoke,
Right through the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian,
Reeled from the sabre stroke.
Shattered and sundered.
Then they rode back, but not,
Not the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them,
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell.
They that had fought so well,
Came through the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.

When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wondered.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred!
- Alfred, Lord Tennyson

    When the 7th Earl of Cardigan misinterpreted his orders to attack Russian naval guns and instead charged entrenched Russian artillery along the Heights during the Crimean War, the disastrous Charge of the Light Brigade was born. British forces attacking Russia in Crimea, whether 1854 or 2024, historically is not a good idea. The 7th Earl of Cardigan learned then what the Ministry of Defence policy wonks are learning today: Victory has many fathers, defeat is born an orphan.

    The charge began with 654 sabres and saw 195 souls emerge unscathed; the remainder either dead, wounded or captured. Our December wasn't quite that bad but brutal just the same as Iowa, Penn State and Alabama all flamed out with only Misery carrying the day as we fall to 14-13 and up 5.55 units in this space. With one college game to go and the NFL playoffs approaching we certainly wish we had gone fishing in December. We enter the New Year with a much reduced bankroll and four Final Four futures tickets in our pocket.

    We have started the new year off in much worse shape many times. The key is to reduce unit size, take them one at a time, and pick up some NFL futures positions. We will keep tracking toward the Super Bowl safety and add a D/ST matrix to the big game attack. The more units we have by then the better.

    That is why we want WASHINGTON (+ four and the hook) in the National Title game. In the provisional early line / possible match up last week this game was (+6). We have to think the late money will come in on the Huskies and this is the easiest call of the season for us because of Michael Penix, Jr. We have been on this guy for close to six years now and feel he is the best pure college passer of this century. He makes throws no one else in the college ranks can.

    Washington's defence is more solid than the numbers would seem to indicate. They give up a lot of passing yards because their opponents are usually behind and need to throw to catch up. The Huskies with a huge advantage on special teams; Michigan miscues in the kicking game nearly lost it all against Alabama.

    Bottom line is we opened the campaign going against Michigan (by taking ECU and the points). We will close out the college season doing the same thing. Penix is a once in a lifetime talent and his offensive line will keep him upright against the Wolverine pass rush. Being from the Pacific Northwest, Washington gets very little respect from established media -- they just win games.

    NFL playoffs approach and those are tough games to handicap as they feature razor-sharp lines. Before that is a final weekend of games, most of which have little playoff bearing. These should be avoided and instead we will jump into the futures market with a couple teams to win their respective conferences (that means make it to the Super Bowl).

    We are going half a unit each on the BROWNS (+1400) and the LIONS (+750). The AFC is wide open now with the collapse of the Chiefs and questions about Buffalo at QB and Miami on the road. The Browns are locked into the five seed and have beaten already each of their three possible opponents for their first weekend match up. Flacco has come on strong late and Cleveland is rolling. This price is too high and we will take a nibble at the big payoff.

    Like the Browns, Detroit has never been to the Super Bowl. In many ways, especially after being robbed last week at Dallas, they are the best team in the NFC; they have balance everywhere and a QB good enough to win. Depending on how the seeding works out we expect the Lions to finish as the third seed and face either Green Bay or the Rams in the first round. They are the only team in the NFC with a realistic chance to beat San Francisco. This price also too high considering a first round win most likely for Detroit.

    Many starters will sit out this week in the NFL as teams prepare for the playoffs. Other than futures plays we never want to be on NFL regular season moves -- the numbers are just too sharp to consistently overcome the vig (-110).

    Our calls here are WASHINGTON (+ four and the hook) for two units to ensure a winning college campaign, and BROWNS (+1400) to win the AFC conference and LIONS (+750) to win the NFC conference each for half a unit. We have strong value on these futures plays and will await the slowing of the tumbling bones to read the tea leaves.

WASHINGTON    16  •  MICHIGAN    10

    We came through December like the Light Brigade thundering out of those Russian batteries, shot to pieces and peppered by shells and musket balls. The Man owned bowl season and much ground was lost. However the NFL Playoffs approach: the safety / D;ST matrix is our sabre for the post-season.

    When in doubt, ride to the sound of the guns. One hundred ninety-five of the Light Brigade lived to tell the tale after doing just that.

    They are still talking about it today.

Sir Alfred, Lord Tennyson's eloquent poetry puts a brave face on the profound stupidity of the 7th Earl of Cardigan in the Crimean War, which we would all be better served to understand as a lesson of incredible ignorance, and to be nothing more than the learning experience that "Stupid Will Get You Killed; not unlike the infamous ignorance that controls every living molecule within the Idiot 46th President of the these United States in these harrowing times.
