Officials cut ribbon on James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital at Vidant Medical Center | Eastern North Carolina Now

For Immediate Release:

GREENVILLE, NC     Vidant Health officials and guests cut the ribbon today on the new James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital at Vidant Medical Center.

The new addition will provide dedicated space to meet the medical needs of the smallest patients and their families - from newly designed patient rooms to pediatric equipment and specially trained staff. This new children's hospital addition was designed through the eyes of a child to be patient- and family- friendly to support an environment of healing.

"At Vidant Health, we have made a promise to eastern North Carolina to provide access, experience and great outcomes," said Dr. David Herman, CEO and president, Vidant Health. "This first-class facility was designed by people who wanted to make the care of children and their families the best it could possibly be. There is an atmosphere that helps decrease anxiety and keep families close together, but it's also a place where great providers come together to deliver that care with concern and compassion."

The addition includes 78,000 square feet of space and includes:

    First floor:

Lobby area - A welcoming environment for pre-admission and admission testing; also includes a café, gift shops (Treasure Chest and Maternal Expressions), theater and breastfeeding support rooms.

Day/medical space - A nine-bed unit for outpatient services, including the care of children requiring sedation.

Radiology department - Services to include ultrasound, radiology, fluoroscopy and other interventions.

Ronald McDonald House at Vidant Medical Center - A comfortable six-room retreat where families can enjoy meals, launder clothes, shower and relax.

Play/therapy yard - Includes swings, a basketball court, climbing structures and picnic tables.

    Second floor:

Kids Immunosuppressed Special Unit (KISU) - A six-bed controlled environment for children with cancer, blood disorders, sickle cell disease, kidney disorders and other illnesses that compromise their immune system.

Special Care Nursery - A 21-bed unit, all private rooms, for infants who no longer need critical care.

"This children's hospital serves the entire eastern third of the state," said Dr. Ronald Perkin, co-medical director of the Maynard Children's Hospital and chair of the Brody School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics. "We have been able to expand our services to embody our philosophy of care, which places children and their families at the center of everything we do. This place is more than concrete and steel; it is a place where miracles happen."

James and Connie Maynard of Raleigh have donated $9 million to the new addition project. A $1.5 million gift will go toward a distinguished professorship in the Department of Pediatrics within the Brody School of Medicine. Maynard is the co-founder and chairman of Investors Management Group, the parent company of Golden Corral Corp.

"Connie and I were just thrilled to be able to give to the hospital and to the medical school to pull those two entities closer together," Maynard said. "Without great physicians, the building doesn't mean much. Without a great building, you can't attract great physicians. It gives us great comfort to find a place to give back to because of the blessings we have had in our lives."

The fundraising campaign associated with this addition was one of the most successful at Vidant Health.

"Our success with this campaign is all due to the generous people across the state," said Joel Butler, president, Vidant Health Foundation. "Every dollar raised will stay here with the children's hospital to help support and grow our programs and services to continue to provide the highest quality care available."

Maynard Children's Hospital in Greenville serves children and families from 29 eastern North Carolina counties. It also serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.

"This event is one more representation of a successful partnership between the Brody School of Medicine and Vidant Health for more than 30 years," said Dr. Paul Cunningham, dean of the Brody School of Medicine. "Once again, history is being created here in eastern North Carolina, and for me, the realization of 'the miracle' of the most modern health comes to life. This amazing beginning that we celebrate today will touch the lives of countless families in the future, and will open the opportunity for long and productive lives for a multitude of children in our region."
