We were not sleeping but we were lazy | Eastern North Carolina Now

The local liberals, and constitutionally un-informed have rendered another editorial opinion that baffles all but the left wing socialists. I am referring to the Washington Daily News. Their editorial on Sunday July 28 demonstrates how warped thinking really works. Admittedly these editorials are on a page that has printed in big bold letters at the top "OPINION". We do have free speech in this country. However, it is simply not good judgement when your printed words allow anyone to easily determine how politically prejudiced both the writer and the paper are. The Beaufort Observer has the candor to represent that we are conservative and our opinions are conservative. The Daily News wants you to believe they are fair and balanced. But they are far from fair and balanced.

The title of this editorial "While you were sleeping" leads one to believe something dishonest or unscrupulous has been done in the dark of the night. Evil is always about in the darkness, isn't it. The liberal Washington Daily News has printed article after article that casts the Republican dominated government in Raleigh in the spin light of not quite being politically honorable. This editorial is but another example of this disingenuousness.

The editorial starts off implying that the average person living in North Carolina is not aware of what the General Assembly is doing. This is an effort to again imply that if we knew what was going on we would be offended. This is wishful thinking on the part of the Daily News. The majority knows what is going on in Raleigh and approves of it. After all, we by majority vote, elected a majority of Republicans and we expect them to act like Republicans.

The Daily News next barb is aimed at voter registration when they say "...the new Voter ID law...calls for some of the strictest regulations in the Union". Wow, that is what the majority of the voters wanted. Only the liberals who use dishonest voting practices to win elections are against have a person prove they are who they say they are, just like when cashing a check. The Daily News is concerned that an ID that cannot be duplicated or easily invented is not required. A water bill receipt or a library card are no longer acceptable as voter identification. This will cost liberals a lot of votes on Election Day. It will probably cost jobs too. A lot of ACORN workers may not get to work on voting days.

They lament that teenagers cannot pre register to vote in high school civics classes. Wonder what they are teaching in those civics classes? Not a lot about our Constitution it would appear from some recent news reports.. Early voting has been cut back. That just gives fewer days for liberals to dig up bodies to vote their way. People will no longer be able to register and vote the same day. A lot of those people could not be found after the election. Cry Daily News, cry.

A real heart breaker for the Daily News is the elimination of straight party voting. The Daily News laments that "...voters best know their candidates before they walk into the voting booths". I thought the education of the voter to know what and who he is voting for is what democracy was all about. The Democrats thought it is was about seeing "the man' and getting one of those palm ballots and that is who we are voting for. Wow, now we have to actually know something to vote. Elimination of the straight party ticket also reduces the opportunity for fraud. North Carolina election law says that even though a straight party ticket is marked, should any candidate for the other party be marked, the straight party ballot looses the vote. This allows for fraud in the marking of ballots in close elections. Eliminating the straight party ticket is going to make our elections more honest. But it will make it more difficult for ACORN to drag people to the polls and tell them how to vote.

Then there is the claim that 5,000 teachers have been eliminated from the payroll. This is nothing more than deception up the point of falsehood. It is a play on how the state budget is put together. The education budget was increased, so how did 5,000 teachers get removed or fired. Maybe the Daily News really is Pravda on the Pamlico. All that harping ad carping about low teacher salaries is just bunk. On the one hand we say we have one of the best teacher training systems in the world. On the other we imply that paying more money will get our children better educated. My spin is the Daily News is accusing teachers of holding back on the quality of education unless we pay them more money. Daily News, you have worn this one out. The simple fact is that over the last decade or two the amount of money spent per pupil has skyrocketed, but objective measures of student learning have remained relatively flat, while standards have been reduced. We have not gotten our money's worth in terms of student achievement.

Another gross inaccuracy is that "the legislature seized control of the state's busiest airport". This is hogwash. The state puts money into the Charlotte airport which is a regional airport. The legislature simply required governance of the airport to be regional and not limited to the City of Charlotte.

Another unfair slam at the legislature is the talk about the increased limit of personal donations from $4,000 to 5,000 and then conveniently implying the legislature has made corporate donations unlimited. It is true the legislature increased the limit another $1,000 but it was the Federal Supreme Court that allowed unlimited donations by corporations. Fair and balanced took another holiday on this one. Pravda on the Pamlico again.

The Daily News delivered another insult to our intelligence in the final paragraph. They took the legislature to task for daring to change the law to allow either the House or the Senate to enter into a lawsuit against the Federal Government to defend the people of North Carolina against an oppressive Federal Government. One of the reasons we have Obama Care also known as The Affordable Care Act is the Attorney General, Roy Cooper, refused to join the law suit against the Federal Government to block this unconstitutional power grab. There are other issues involving voting rights, the equitable distribution of highway funds, Medicaid, etc that our liberal Attorneys General refused to defend us against. Now we have representation to protect our rights from more than one self anointed liberal. The Daily News feelings are hurt because one liberal can no longer deny us justice.

The final paragraph of this exercise in constitutional ignorance talks about monumental changes. What they really meant is terrifying changes to liberals. Yes, these are terrifying changes to liberals, because they always did know what is best for us. Washington Daily News, you are the one that needs to wake up. To some of us these changes are nowhere near as much as we really need. Those Republicans in Raleigh are political pikers. We need more real change, not the light varnish that this Republican legislature laid on us.
