    Mr. Jatha Milford Tetterton, age 88, a resident of Washington, NC died Friday November 15, 2013 at River Trace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was affectingly known to many as "Goon" or "Mr. Goon".

    A celebration of Milford's life will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday November 17, 2013 in Wesley Hall at First United Methodist Church, 304 West Second Street Washington with Rev. Danny Allen officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. A private graveside service will be held at a later time at Oakdale Cemetery.

    Mr. Tetterton was born in Beaufort County on July 8, 1925, son of the late Jatha Mederith Tetterton and the late Emmie Toler Tetterton. He graduated from Washington High School and served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1956 he married the former Rita Potter who survives. He was employed by George Davis Signs, Mish-Tetterton Signs and Tetterton's Lettering until his retirement in 2000.

    Milford was an active member of First United Methodist Church as long as his health allowed. He served the church in a number of capacities. He very much enjoyed being the "Bacon Man" for First United Methodist Church Men's Breakfast; however his favorite task was in giving a smile and special welcome to all in his duty as usher. Milford was a devoted husband and loving father. He was a gentle and humble man with a quick wit, welcoming smile and happy laugh. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

    Milford is survived by his wife: Rita of the home and daughter Nancy Tetterton of Raeford, N.C. He is also survived by a number of cousins and friends. Patsy Bass had a special place in his heart. A bright light in "Mr. Goom's life was Elizabeth "Doogie" Mason. He was greatly blessed by her love, support and encouragement. Special neighbors and devoted friends are the Tim Borrclli family who gave assistance in so many ways. A special thank you to Gloria Outlaw for her loyal and devoted services as care taker and the family extends a heartfelt gratitude to the staff of River Trace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and also Continuum Home Care and Hospice for their care. Along with his parents Milford is predeceased by his brother-in-law Ray Potter.

    Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice or to the New Horizon Fund at First United Methodist Church, 304 West Second Street, Washington, NC 27889.
