Well, Mitt Romney has finally released his 2011 tax return, all 379 pages of it. Yes, 379 pages!! And now we are going to start hearing about all the "bad" things he did and "good" things he didn't do in his return.

What store?? The Beaufort County store. You know, the store run by our County Commissioners. It sure doesn't seem to be the Commissioners. Well, at least five of 'em.

We have for a long time had bankruptcy laws that have served us well. They are understood and over time and usage they have worked.

It would not seem that the folks who were arrested were on an alligator killing spree. They seemed to be looking to get rid of a truly scary critter and get some meat out of the deal to boot.

It's interesting. Over and over we hear the Dems repeating one of their prime talking points. It goes something like this: "Where is the detail in the Reps proposals??".

So now we know the Prez' recipe for beer or ale or whatever they are brewing up at the white house. Apparently the key ingredient is honey from the white house hive.

If you turn on the TV news, you will likely hear about the anarchists who are planning to disrupt both the Rep and Dem conventions. Lovely people, all.

The Prez is reported to have taken his wife and kids to church last Sunday (8/19) at a church near the WH. (I would guess it had to be a "Christian" church.) That would make the second or third (or maybe even fourth) time he has gone to church since he was anointed.

Question for Mitt Romney: When you worked at Bain did the company do your taxes or did you take your W-2s, 1099s and whatever other "tax" documents you received to a CPA who prepared your taxes??

Since 1962 when Rachel Carson wrote her ground breaking book "Silent Spring" a lot of things in the environmental arena that needed to be changed got changed - mostly for the better.

We are being told that some very large percentage (well over half) of the American population is partaking of (and presumably enjoying) the largess of government entitlement spending.

We hear a lot of conversation these days about how America is losing (has already lost??) it's edge. We are no longer "exceptional". We even have a "ruler" who preaches those things and apologizes to foreign kings, satraps and the like for what he seems to view as our country's past transgressions.

Sometimes it is difficult to understand things the Prez says. Take, for instance, his comments to the effect that people who have "succeeded" have not done so by themselves.

TRIP, a transportation research group headquartered in Washington, D.C., recently compiled a report on North Carolina transportation. The group says the state is facing a $65 billion funding shortfall in transportation funding. The NCDOT reportedly is not one bit surprised. They already knew that.

Every time something even remotely contentious rear it's ugly head, we hear politicians, both pro and con, spinning the facts to ensure that anyone who hears whatever it is, gets the "true" story.

The other day I was reading the monthly magazine produced by my electric co-op (Carolina Country July, 2012). In it there was an interesting opinion piece written by Mr. Michael Burnette, Senior VP and COO for power supply at North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation.

How do you suppose our Governess ever got to be our Governess?? I'm starting to believe (yes, I'll admit to being a slow learner) that if she had a brain, she might be dangerous (as the old saying goes).

Mowing your lawn is usually a rather boring activity, but it does give you an (pretty much) uninterrupted opportunity to contemplate the great mysteries of the universe - or something.

There was an article in the 6/29 issue of the WDN (page 3, News Briefs) that said the NC backers of the NC private tuition law have given up (for now).

It was interesting to hear about Mitt romney's alleged bad behavior while in Prep School (not elementary school, not middle school, not high school but "Prep School". (Ahhh, the beauty of not so subtle class warfare.)

The Beaufort County Commissioners would seem to have done it again. They sit idly by while one of their own seems to be trying to take charge of things (presumably to remake them in his own image - surely thereby enhancing his own stature).

We hear the Prez talking to the Russian President and telling him that after the election he will have more latitude to do things (than he does in the run-up to the election).

A couple of weeks ago in looking at the latest county budget recommendation coming out of the Office of the County Manager, I offered up some comments about the Rte. 17 lobbyist, questioning the amount of money we are spending on the activity and the results that have been achieved.

Educating our kids is an expensive proposition. Some blame the dismal results we achieve on the teacher's unions and their work rules, class size, tenure, lack of parental interest, the breakdown of the family, poverty.

Fortunately for Attorney General Eric Holder, his confirmation hearings happened at a time when the Dems were in firm control of both houses of Congress, otherwise the results might have been different.

If there are any among us who believe that a reassessment will result in an overall reduction in taxes, much less even a revenue neutral situation, I have a bridge I'll sell them.

It is amazing how many things politicians and bureaucrats can think up for other people to do. We are repeatedly directed to implement all manner of great sounding things.

I downloaded the 2013 County budget (all 168 pages) and have been through every page in it. I worked my way through it one page at a time to get a "fix" on what's in it.
