I woke on Sunday to a fair morning. The air was cool and the sky was bright. What a pleasant surprise June has been. The hateful, southern humidity has been reduced enough to make the month mock the time of early spring.

I arrived in Elizabeth City, early in the afternoon, on Wednesday. It had rained the whole day. When I crossed the three rivers, it was impossible to see where the rivers ended and the sky started, on the horizon.

I left school on Friday and headed for Elizabeth City. I had not seen Lyla in almost three weeks, and it felt like longer. I had bought a full tank of gas on Thursday, as already some stations were out of it.

August has been like a breath of fresh air, after Julys' heat and humidity. It is an especially lovely time to stroll by the laughing river or to sit on a rock and watch clouds.
