These Asian Elephants are old and wise, and use their captive environment to mark time and survive. I always wonder: What's in it for them? What constitutes their will to survive? I think they seriously enjoy the regular meals and the company of humans: Above and below.     photo by Stan Deatherage

At some point, even these gentle beasts know it is time to return to the quite of their home stuck dead in the center of the capital of the world's most advanced civilization: Above and below.     photos by Stan Deatherage

I return down the quiet streets through the stable neighborhoods of Woodley Park to Marriott Hotel's Conference: Above and below.     photos by Stan Deatherage

This suit-dressed county commissioner / BCN's chief photographer, although in comfortable shoes, has a full slate of meetings tonight. It was a fine afternoon at the Zoo, with Simon and Garfunkel's song still bouncing around in my head. Maybe on my next visit, the Orangutans will be out in the warming winter's sun, and maybe then they will inform me as to why they are so "skeptical of changes in their cages," and just why the "zookeeper is (so) very fond of rum."
