News Release:

On Tuesday, January 7, event organizers from the Darleen Flamingo 5K Run/Walk presented a gift of $18,000 to the Shepard Cancer Foundation board members, a benefactor of the proceeds from the event held on November 2, 2013. The event, held for the fourth year in Belhaven, featured a 5K run/walk, auction, raffles, and a breakfast after party with live music and awards. The Darleen Flamingo 5K is organized in memory of Darleen Smith, who lived by the event's motto "Make Your Own Party."

"As always, it was a monumental success in every way!" Says Ainsley Rusevlyan, Shepard Cancer Foundation president. "The event is always a class act and the money raised allows our foundation to help local cancer survivors financially, emotionally and medically. Thank you to everyone associated with this wonderful event  -  organizers, sponsors and participants. "

The mission of the Shepard Cancer Foundation is to financially support and promote the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center in its efforts to improve the mind, body and spirit of cancer patients, survivors and caregivers.

"We are so fortunate to have the Shepard Cancer Foundation in our community." Says Kelly Smith, wife of Cade Smith, Darleen's youngest son. "We are honored to donate the proceeds from the Flamingo 5K in memory of my mother-in-law, Darleen Smith and in support of cancer patients in Eastern NC."
