He was born on June 23, 1930, in Washington, NC to the late Dr. John C. Tayloe, Sr., of Washington, NC and the late Nell Holt Tayloe.

    John Cotten Tayloe, Jr., 83, passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2014.

    He was born on June 23, 1930, in Washington, NC to the late Dr. John C. Tayloe, Sr., of Washington, NC and the late Nell Holt Tayloe.

    John attended Staunton Military School for two years and graduated from Washington High School in 1948.

    He was a member of the 690th Field Artillery 30th Division NCNG and served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict.

    In 1955, John obtained a baccalaureate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He went on to graduate from the UNC School of Medicine, where he also completed his orthopedic residency. John opened his practice in New Bern, NC in 1966 as the first orthopedic surgeon in the area. He was on the staff of Carolina East Hospital in New Bern for over 40 years. His quick, dry wit was always at the ready to lighten the mood. He was also a member and past president of the Seaboard Medical Association, as well as a member of the NC Orthopedic Society.

    John was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in New Bern, where he served on both the Vestry and the Trust Fund Board.

    He enjoyed golf with friends, tinkering with computers and researching family genealogy. John was a loyal friend and was devoted to his family. He loved to spend time with his wife, children and grandchildren, by whom he will be greatly missed. .

    John is survived by his wife, Deborah Cook Tayloe, of New Bern; his son, John Cotten Tayloe, III, of New Bern; his son and daughter-in-law, Hunter Norman Tayloe, Sr., and Jann King Tayloe of Surf City, NC; his son, Joshua S. Tayloe of Boston, MA; his daughter, Karen E. Tayloe of Lexington, VA; and three grandchildren, John Cotten Tayloe, IV, of New Bern and Casey King Tayloe and Hunter Norman Tayloe, Jr., of Surf City.

    A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in New Bern at 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 9, 2014. A reception will follow the service. A burial service at St. Peter's Episcopal Chapel in Washington, NC will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 10, 2014.

    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tayloe Endowment for nursing students, Beaufort County Community College Foundation, PO Box 1069, Washington, NC 27889; the John C. Tayloe Medical Scholarship Fund, UNC Medical School, 880 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., Chapel Hill, NC 27514; or charity of choice.
