Dr. Larry Dean McSwain PhD, age 64, a resident of 205 Shad Bend Drive, Washington, died Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at Vidant Inpatient Hospice in Greenville.

    Dr. Larry Dean McSwain PhD, age 64, a resident of 205 Shad Bend Drive, Washington, died Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at Vidant Inpatient Hospice in Greenville.

    A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Wanoca Presbyterian Church in Washington, conducted by Pastor Travis Boyd.

    The family will receive friends following the service in the Church Fellowship Hall and other times at the home.

    Dr. McSwain was born in Shelby, N.C. on October 15, 1949. He was the son of the late Horace "Bud" Clifford Swain and Virginia Harrill Swain. Dr. McSwain was a graduate of the University of North Carolina and worked 20 years at National Spinning. Later, Dr. McSwain went back to school and earned his Master Degree in Anthropology and his PhD in Coastal Resource Management. He was a professor and taught at East Carolina University, Beaufort County Community College and Pitt Community College prior to his declining health.

    As a young man, Dr. McSwain was active in Scouting, where he earned his Eagle Scout. He loved the outdoors and to fish, hunt, his pets and his family. Dr. McSwain attended Wanoca Presbyterian Church.

    On January 21, 1989, Mr. McSwain married the former Julia Strickland, who survives.

    Survivors include his wife, Julia of the home; three children, Meghan Strickland of Greenville, Chad McSwain of Kings Mountain, Chrissy McSwain of Shelby; grandson, Zayden Thomas Strickland of Greenville; sister, Cynthia McSwain Stowe and husband, Rick and their children, Ashley and Emily of Columbia, S.C.; special cousins, Shirley and Jimmy McKinney of Boiling Springs, and very special friend and caregiver, Debbie Ambrose of the home.

    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wanoca Presbyterian Church, 921 E. 6th Street, Washington, N.C. 27889 or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 1311 Mamaroneck Avenue, Suite 310, White Plains, NY 10605.
