    Dr. George John Miller, Jr. MD a resident of 148 Catnip Point, Bath, NC, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2014 at his home.

    A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at 2:00p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Washington, NC. officiated by The Reverend Ray Souza and Mr. John Baldwin. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery of Washington, NC. Dr. Scot Reeg, Dr. Steven Ainsworth, Dr. Jeff Barwick, Mr. Rodney Simpson, Dr. Mark Miller, Jr., Mr. Lucas Miller, Mr. Jeremy Parker, Mr. Michael Smith and Mr. Bill Miller, Jr. will serve as pallbearers. Dr. Zack Waters and Herman Gaskins, Jr. will serve as honorary pallbearers.

    Dr. Miller was born on September 8, 1942 in Port Arthur, Texas to the late George John Miller, MD and Mary Teresa Miller. He was a 1959 graduate from St. Patrick's High School in Binghamton, NY, and a 1963 graduate of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. Dr. Miller obtained his medical degree in 1967 from the University of Rochester School of Medicine in Rochester, NY. He completed his internship at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville from 1967-68. In 1968, Dr. Miller began his service to his country as a Commander in the U.S. Navy. He attended Flight School in Pensacola, Fla, worked as a Naval flight surgeon on the Aircraft Carrier, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Dr. Miller also served additional assignments at Oceana Naval Air Station, Virginia Beach, VA, Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, VA and Charleston Naval Hospital, Charleston, SC. In 1979, Dr. Miller moved to Washington, NC and was the only orthopedic surgeon in area for several years. Over thirty- five years of practice in Washington and Beaufort County, Dr. Miller help thousands of patients with their orthopedic needs. Orthopedics and serving others were the passions of Dr. Miller's life. Through the years, as other partners joined him in practice, Dr. Miller never waivered in his hard work and long hours to see that every patient was cared for. Dr. Miller, through his years of practice, mentored many medical students, medical residents and young orthodpedic surgeons. He continued this tireless devotion to service even to the end of his life.

    Dr. Miller also loved his family and was very devoted to them and their happiness. On November 16, 1991, He married Sandra Davis Miller, who survives In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Christopher Jeffery Miller of Stokes, NC, Thomas John Miller of Charleston, SC, Jessica Nicole Smith of Modesto, CA, George John Miller, III of the home and Kellie Michelle Miller of the home, a brother, William J. Miller, MD and wife Carol Miller, MD of Binghamton, NY, two sisters, Mary E. Miller-Jones and husband Ronald Jones of Silver Spring, MD and Deborah Miller-Slipek and husband Chester Slipek of St. Paul, MN, three sisters-in-law, Ann Miller Loso of Vestal, NY, Rebecca Miller of Belfast, ME and Margaret Jastran Miller of Interlaken, NY, and numerous nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

    Outside of his busy life as an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Miller, supported the East Carolina School of Music, the Beaufort County Art's Council and the Beaufort County Community College Foundation. Dr. Miller enjoyed classical music and during his time at Holy Cross, sang in PAKS, an acapella singing group.

    Dr. Miller enjoyed many hobbies, among them was sailing Bath Creek in the Queen Anne's Revenge with his good friend the late Wilton Smith. He was a very accomplished pilot and was one of few flight medical examiners in this area. Dr. Miller enjoyed scuba diving and would fly his family, on their private plane, to Green Turtle Cay in the Bahamas, where he enjoyed a wonderful dive with his son, Geordie this past Easter. He also enjoyed downhill snow skiing. Dr. Miller was a gourmet cook and loved to entertain family and friends and share his culinary creations. Dr. Miller was not only the breadwinner in his family but also the bread maker and many were blessed to receive a loaf of his homemade bread.

    Since moving to this area in 1979, Dr. George John Miller, Jr. a man of large stature, has shown the thousands of lives he has touched that his large heart, devotion to the practice of medicine and his love of family and his zest for life will live forever in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He lived by the motto of serving God by serving others. As he took his Hippocratic Oath, it was a promise he kept to every patient he encountered. He commented many times that in every house where he entered, he would enter only for the good of my patients, keeping myself far from all intentional ill-doing. He committed his life to this promise of doing no harm. The practice of medicine was his life and the world was his office, as he met people wherever their need was and helped bring healing. There is an old saying that "To whom much is given, much is required." Dr. Miller lived this each day and his call to us would be go forth and do likewise.

    The family will have a Celebration of Dr. Miller's life on Monday, March 3, 2014 from 6:00p.m.-8:00p.m. at his home located at 148 Catnip Point, Bath, NC. The family welcomes all those whose lives have been touched by Dr. Miller's unfailing devotion to join them at this time of celebration.
