    Mr. Jack Everette Clayton, age 85, a resident of 111 DL Drive, Washington, died Friday, April 18, 2014 at his home.

    Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, April 21, 2014 at First Church of Christ, Washington, conducted by S. Ray West and Steve Hill. Burial with military honors will follow in Mt. Olive Church of Christ Cemetery, Highway 264 East, Belhaven.

    The Elders and Deacons of First Church of Christ will serve as pallbearers.

    Mr. Clayton was born in Hyde County on August 25, 1928. He was the son of the late Staten Riley Clayton and Lillian Lowe Clayton. Mr. Clayton was a retired journeyman meat cutter for several grocery stores. He served in the U.S Army, Air Force and the National Guard.

    Mr. Clayton was very active in his community. He was a member of the V.F.W. where he had served as Chaplain, Treasurer, Commander and Trustee; Woodmen of the World Camp 623, having served as President and Treasurer; and Bunyan Ruritan Club, having served as President (several times), Vice-President and awarded the Ruritan of the Year several times including 2013. Mr. Clayton was a member of First Church of Christ, serving as Elder, Deacon and Sunday School teacher. He also was a Scout Master for over 20 years.

    Mr. Clayton was married to the former Elda Mae Hendershot, who survives.

    Surviving with his wife are his children, Denice Smith and husband, Russell of Washington, Terrie Harding and husband, Wayne of Chocowinity, Ricky Clayton and wife, Trish of Washington, Jeffery Clayton and wife, Kelly of Cape Canaveral, FL; step daughter, Ann Hastings of Washington; seven grandchildren, Zach Smith, Olivia Smith Riley and husband, Jon, Brandon Harding and wife, Ashley, Megan Clayton, Abby Clayton, Bailey Clayton, Charley Clayton; three great grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; 14 step great grandchildren; one brother, Edsel Clayton; and three sisters, Verna Spencer, Margaret Miller and Alice Miller.

    In addition to his parents, Mr. Clayton was preceded in death by two step children, Denzil Washington, Sr., Wayne Waters, Sr. and two brothers, Ottis Clayton and Leck Clayton.

    The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Sunday, April 20, 2014 at Paul Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington and other times at the home.
