News Releases:

WASHINGTON, D.C.     Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) is pleased to announce that three Cape Hatteras National Seashore beaches will be staffed by lifeguards for the summer. The announcement comes after months of negotiations in which Congressman Jones played a crucial role in ensuring that these employees were hired. The National Park Service (NPS) had previously announced that lifeguards would not be hired due to budgetary constraints, but with the assistance of Congressman Jones, they were able to reallocate NPS money and supplement it with stop-gap funding from Hyde County and the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau in order to provide the service.

"Having beaches staffed by lifeguards is important to Cape Hatteras National Seashore," said Congressman Jones. "Without that option, vacationing families looking for the extra safety and security that lifeguards provide may choose to go elsewhere, which would hurt the local economy. I want to thank the National Park Service, Hyde County, and the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau for working with me to provide this important service."

Coquina Beach, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Beach, and Ocracoke Day Use Area will be staffed with lifeguards from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, seven days a week, from Saturday, May 24 through Monday, September 1.
