Jones Applauds Supreme Court Decision in Favor of Religious Freedom | Eastern North Carolina Now

    WASHINGTON, D.C.     Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) released the following statement applauding the Supreme Court's decision to uphold religious freedom in a case in which Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. and Conestoga Wood Specialties Corp. challenged the Obamacare mandate requiring businesses to provide health insurance that covers abortion-inducing drugs and devices – even if those drugs and devices violate the business owner's religious beliefs:

    "I applaud the Supreme Court for defending our constitutional right to religious freedom," said Congressman Jones. "Forcing business owners to provide health coverage that violates their conscience is clearly unlawful, and I am pleased that the Court has upheld the rule of law established in the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). I will continue working to defend the constitutional rights of the American people and fight against the many detrimental effects of Obamacare."

    The Supreme Court ruled that the Obamacare mandate violates the RFRA, which states that the government "shall not substantially burden a person's exercise of religion." Along with a coalition of 71 House members and 15 senators, Congressman Jones filed an amicus curiae brief in January to urge the Supreme Court to recognize the authority of the RFRA in this case.

    Congressman Jones voted against Obamacare each time it was considered in the House, and he has cosponsored every bill aimed at repealing all or part of the law.
