STORY:
The Rocky Hock Playhouse is presenting their 2014 summer musical Simon Peter, Fisher of Men by Gloria Emmerich. The Playhouse has a long history in the area and has operated continuously since the doors opened in August of 2000. Their summer musical focuses on the life of the Apostle Peter and his relationship with Christ and the impact he had on the early Christian church. Other principle characters include his wife, mother-in-law, Mary Magdalene, and the disciples John, James, and Thomas.
The story begins as Peter is caught in the act of denying ever knowing Christ. Special effects and lighting are used to help portray the ominous impact the denial had on Peter, his family and friends, and on the future of scripture and the church.
As the story unfolds Peter takes the forefront as an early leader of the church. He does a great deal of traveling and thousands are converted due to his evangelism.
The story is not without some levity. Peter's mother-in-law, Jara, is a comical character full of wisdom and wit. She and Peter have their "clashes" but a mutual respect for each other wins out in the end.
Gloria Emmerich did a tremendous amount of historical research when writing the story and the result is a solid biblically based inspirational musical on the life of one of the great leaders of the Christian movement. Peter's life is legendary and his message has spread throughout the world over the past two thousand years.
The story concludes with the martyrdom of Peter and James but the uplifting finale will leave playgoers feeling inspired and optimistic.
The script and all the music in this production of Simon Peter, Fisher of Men was penned by Gloria Emmerich. She has written over 75 full length musicals and most of her shows have premiered at the Rocky Hock Playhouse and are published and made available to the public.
The musical premiers at the Rocky Hock Playhouse in Edenton on July 15 and runs through August 9, 2014. All Rocky Hock shows are completely family friendly and people of all ages are encouraged to attend. The Rocky Hock Playhouse is one of only a few full time professional Christian theatres on the East Coast. Call (252) 482-4621 for tickets and information. www.rockyhockplayhouse.com
