Jones Introduces Bill to Name Wilmington Post Office After Meadowlark Lemon

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) introduced a bill to name a Wilmington post office after international basketball star and Eastern North Carolina native Meadowlark Lemon. Known as the "Crown Prince of Basketball," Meadowlark Lemon delighted fans across the world as a member of the Harlem Globetrotters for over 26 seasons, playing in more than 16,000 games. His dream of becoming a Harlem Globetrotter began after seeing a newsreel about the team at the Ritz Theatre in Wilmington, where he grew up. Meadowlark Lemon was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003 and is now an ordained minister and inspirational speaker.

"Eastern North Carolina is proud to have been the childhood home of one of the most famous basketball players of our generation," said Congressman Jones. "Not only did Meadowlark Lemon achieve great success as a member of the Harlem Globetrotters, he is well-known for his motivational speaking and work to benefit young people. It is only appropriate to honor him with a post office in his hometown of Wilmington."

Congressman Jones' bill would designate the United States postal facility at 314 Lennon Drive, Wilmington, North Carolina, as the "Meadowlark Lemon Post Office."

Jones Receives Freedom Fighter Award from Top Conservative Organization

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) has been honored with the Freedom Fighter Award from leading grassroots conservative organization FreedomWorks. The Freedom Fighter Award was presented to members of Congress who consistently voted to defend economic freedom in 2013.

Congressman Jones was one of the top 10 highest-ranked members of the entire House of Representatives and the highest-ranked member of the North Carolina congressional delegation on FreedomWorks' annual scorecard with a near-perfect rating on 21 key votes. Scored votes included those to stop raising the debt limit, to cut wasteful government spending, to repeal and defund Obamacare, and to prevent the federal government from spying on U.S. citizens without a warrant, among other things.

"It is an honor to receive this year's Freedom Fighter Award," said Congressman Jones. "As a member of Congress, it is my greatest privilege and responsibility to advance the principles of freedom on which America was founded."
