Jones Condemns Obama's Unlawful Release of Five Taliban Leaders

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) voted in favor of a resolution condemning President Obama's unlawful release of five Taliban leaders from the U.S. Naval Station in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in exchange for the release of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. H. Res. 644 condemns the Obama administration's disregard for the law, which holds that Congress must be notified 30 days before any prisoners are moved from the U.S. Naval Station in Guantanamo Bay.

"The Obama administration clearly violated the law by releasing these five Taliban prisoners, and such a disregard for the law and Congress is dangerous to national security," said Congressman Jones. "Article II Section 3 of the Constitution states that the President 'shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed,' and President Obama failed to uphold his constitutional duty by releasing the Taliban prisoners from Guantanamo Bay. As a result of violating the law, President Obama has risked our national security and further eroded trust between the executive branch and Congress."

Jones Votes to Reign in Obama EPA

WASHINGTON, D.C.     Today, Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) voted for H.R. 5078, a bill which would prohibit the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Army Corps of Engineers from implementing a proposed rule to broadly expand their regulatory jurisdiction over "waters of the United States" under the Clean Water Act. The bill passed the House of Representatives this afternoon by a vote of 262-152. It now goes to the Senate for further consideration.

"The Obama administration's proposal to greatly expand the power of the EPA is deeply troubling," said Congressman Jones. "If allowed to continue, this proposal would have an incredibly negative effect on job creation on economic growth. That's the last thing we need in Eastern North Carolina."
