Jane's family will receive friends at her home.

Jane was born December 7, 1923, in Washington, daughter of Juanita O'Brien and Claud Gladstone Gardner. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gray Hodges of Washington; by her brother, George Gardner of Washington; by her brothers-in-law, Jay Hodges, Jr., and Morris Snyder, both of Washington; and by her stepfather, Coley Tankard of Washington. She is survived by her sister, Frances Gardner Snyder of Washington; by her cousin, Patricia Tankard Brown, and her husband Hal, of Winston-Salem; and by her sisters-in-law, Ruth Hodges and Ruth Gardner, both of Washington.

Jane loved her church, First Presbyterian Church in Washington, where she was a member of the choir, served as a Sunday school teacher, and was a member of the Women of the Church. Jane was happy and proud of the Honorary Lifetime Membership award she received from the Women of the Church.

On February 7, 1949, Jane married Gray Hodges of Washington. They had four children, Coley Hodges of Washington; Janie Hodges Brunson, and her husband Bob, of Raleigh; Gray Hodges, and his wife Susan, of Washington; and Claud Hodges of Washington.     Jane was a 1941 graduate of Washington High School and a 1945 graduate of Women's College in Greensboro, where she earned a degree in education and served as a teacher in Beaufort County. After leaving the classroom, she devoted all of her time to raising a family in the home.

Jane loved her children, grandchildren, relatives and friends and was most happy when she could be with them. She treasured the days every year when she and her family moved to Edgewater Beach for the summer months and lived for several weeks at their cottage on the shores of the Pamlico River.

Jane was a charter member of the Stratford Book Club and was a member of the Ramblers Supper Club. Jane was a great cook and she especially was fond of reading. Jane made a lifetime commitment to correspond with relatives and friends through the mailing of hand-written letters and cards.

Jane's family thanks Paul Funeral Home in Washington for its care.
