Winter storm prompts university closure

A winter storm that dropped a mix of ice, snow and sleet on campus Feb. 16 and 17 prompted cancellation of evening classes on Monday and university closure on Tuesday.

Officials had planned to open the university with classes on a three-hour delay Tuesday, but worsening conditions led to the decision to close. "Conditions have deteriorated since 7 a.m. because of re-freezing and additional light freezing rain," said Bill Bagnell, associate vice chancellor for campus operations.

"Parking lots became hazardous on campus. So we responded quickly to those changing conditions."

Employees like Denise Miller, shown clearing her windshield in the images below, made their way to campus early. Facilities services crews worked to clear university walkways and parking lots.
