I saw signs in Nash County some years back on farms---NO NAFTA!
I had no real clue what they were citing. It was early in the legislative works and got neither other publicity nor any explanation to me as an average citizen. It happened during the Clinton Administration. You can blame a "liberal" President, but it was a bi-partisan act by Congress which Clinton SIGNED into law as well. All of them got big bucks to represent us working taxpayers and make laws which are supposed to HELP US. Big Corporations wrote it!

Apparently it is a first cousin to Trickle Down VooDoo Economics passed under Reagan. This pig-in-a-poke was promised to enhance America's economic growth. The assumption is favor the rich and corporations and it will "trickle down to benefit the average citizens working in America."
Now, we are some 50 years into the program. It started just like the Roosevelt reforms at the end of the Great Depression as a possible SOLUTION to a great economic problem. HOWEVER, there is a major difference between the so called "Socialist" moves of Franklin Roosevelt and what the result of a Conservative Solution sold to us as THE ANSWER.
The New Deal WORKED / these newer programs DO NOT!!!
Here is the present result of 50 years under Conservative Theories of Economics:
• 1% now own 80% of the money in America.
• Corporate Welfare and tax favoritism to the rich individuals and corps means the working middle class now pays the majority of taxes to support the infrastructure they enjoy.
• The PR of Conservatism is amazing---we now buy poison and think it is good medicine.
• Average voters are wooed by anti-abortion / homophobia / religious promises to make this diverse culture in America back into the "Righteous Culture" of days gone by.
• The Supreme Court has been steadily altered to a Conservative mind set.
• We are being told a lie that America is Christian per the Founding Fathers.
• The skills of distortion by Madison Avenue advertising are the same a Goebbels used in Germany to work up to torturing and killing any who were not pure Aryans.
I am more than troubled by the naïve outlook of too many Americans. We watch the horror stories from Baltimore and their riots. The National Guard is now on the streets keeping order at the barrel of a gun. Too many want to say, "Those awful blacks are deserving of their treatment---after all they are the ones being taken for prison for "all the crime. This proves they are bad and we must shoot them even if they have no weapons. I am afraid to go out of my house."
I read a book many years ago from the book-of-the-month club: "The Diaries of Goebbels." It was his daily description of the process by which the Nazi Party took over Germany---and then tried to invade surrounding countries to have their natural resources to run their war machines. Slave labor was part of the program. Putting Jews into ghettos was a first move. Next it was concentration camps. The sign on the gate read: "Arbeit Macht Frie" = Work produces Freedom. The Jews, Gypsies, and homosexuals were the first to be taken at the point of a gun to accomplish the "perfecting and cleansing of Germany."
The "Final Solution" was PR talk for gassing thousands at the time, starving them to death, and using giant ovens to incinerate the evidence. Many heard rumors of the horror, but the stories were so awful no one believed them. Local people with hearts of gold helped them escape to America and other places where they told their stories of horror. Once more, people who heard such rationalized: "They are just bitter and making this stuff up. They are puffing their tales to get attention. Germans are civilized white people who would never do such awful things!"
The movie, "Shindler's List," shows how a shrewd German businessman profited from free labor to produce his goods. At the same time the "Shindler Jews" were protected and spared the death camps with his equally shrewd moves to keep his factories going. You might call it a "compromise with conscience not lost." That movie is a depiction of horror AND compassion operating side-by-side. The abject truth of Goebbels' slick Madison Avenue propaganda machine came to a clear light as American troops approached Berlin. Dachau and Auschwitz were on the journey and our soldiers wretched over the smell and sights they encountered.
The propaganda of Germany was based on: "Tell a lie big enough and often enough---and people will come to believe it is TRUE!"
Between "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" and "Goebbels Diaries" our hindsight became 20/20. We waited too long to avoid a Second World War---until Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Our lend-lease of planes and ships had to turn into daylight bombing raids by the 8th Air Force. US airmen had to go and "help" England avoid invasion. Daylight bombing cost some 40% of all planes and airmen. We slowly-but-surely approached another gigantic "war to end all wars" BECAUSE you could no longer believe the propaganda of the Nazi Regime.
The basic problem is the same as with NAFTA and Trickle Down Economics---it sounds good with proper PR logic added, but eventually you have to face reality. Our soldiers were ordered to go into the nearby towns and force all the citizens to witness the results of their purification theory. When dissenting German citizens like Rev. Dietrich Bonheoffer were arrested and put in prison or concentration camps, his comment was: "They came for the Jews and I did not say anything because I was not a Jew. They came for the Professors and I still said nothing because I was not a professor. When they came for me there was no one left to say a word!"
C.S. Lewis wrote one of the most insightful books entitled "The Screwtape Letters." In it he tells of a main demon, named "Screwtape," who gives instructions to lower minions doing the actual deception and distortions. A key instruction is that you use gradual means to succeed. A sloping trail is hard for people to detect. They slowly are taken down to the depths of Hell and do not realize where they are headed! We, then have them where we want them without any rebellion!"
Commercials are full of major things to get you to buy the product. Grocery stores have social psychologists studying the layout and how subtle cues encourage people to pick it up, look it over, and ultimately buy it. The layout of our new Food Lion is all about making people go all over the store---even if they need only 3 items. Along the journey are presented more goodies and when you reach the check-out, your buggy is twice as full as you intended. The final step is to show you how much you "saved" by having your "whatever card . . ."
WE SAVED YOU SO MUCH YOU HAVE TO COME AGAIN SOON!!!
One of my benefits of having a degree in Psychology and spending a lifetime in counseling is that I am not that easy to fool. The lady coming in to complain about her husband's infidelity and get the new minister to "straighten him out," is a deception. One who came in and shared her "tale of woe" had me thinking half-way through: "If I were married to a bitch who complains like you, be darned if I would not find someone nicer too!!!" Men respond to love---not bitching and moaning! Women are the same when they have their affairs. Reality vs. PR is in every corner of life.
When people wake up to the reality of why their rear end hurts---it is not a new hemorrhoid---it is a big lag bolt covered in K-Y Jelly that has been slipped in and now the jelly has melted!
