The Rocky Hock Playhouse to present the Easter musical "Crown of Thorns" | Eastern North Carolina Now

    The Rocky Hock Playhouse dinner theatre will present its 17th annual Easter musical in Edenton March 19 through April 12, 2016. This musical, by composer Gloria Emmerich, is full of inspirational and insightful songs that help unravel the beautiful story of the passion of Christ during the final days of his ministry leading up to his death and ultimate resurrection.

    The story focuses on Jesus' earthly ministry. Characters include Peter, his mother-in-law, a paralytic, the disciple John, Jesus' mother Mary, and Mary Magdalene. The musical closes with a powerful reenactment of the Crucifixion and resurrection. The crucifixion is done tastefully and the show is suitable for children of all ages.

    CROWN OF THORNS is an original musical by Gloria Emmerich, resident composer, playwright and actress at the Playhouse.

    The beautiful and familiar story will come to life on the Rocky Hock stage in Edenton. The Playhouse is a dinner theatre and ticket prices include an all-you-care-to-eat buffet.

    Tickets are $22.95 for children (6 - 12 years old), $28.95 for seniors, and $29.95 for adults. Ticket prices include the buffet. Call the box office at (252) 482-4621 for group rates and further information.

The Cast:

    Gloria Emmerich (Suzanna / Jara) was born in Newport, Oregon and is our resident musical director, playwright, lyricist, and composer. She has written over 75 full-length musicals - many of which have been performed around the world. Gloria appears in all Rocky Hock productions. She earned a Bachelor of Music Degree and Master of Music Degree in Vocal Performance from San Diego State University. Gloria and Jeffrey have been married for 44 years and have two adult children and two grandchildren. Their daughter Holly serves as a full time missionary with Wycliffe Associates in Cameroon, Africa.

    Jeffrey Emmerich (Jesus / Daniel) was born in Bend, Oregon. He was previously on the drama faculty at North Central University in Minneapolis, MN and is currently head of the drama department at College of The Albemarle in Elizabeth City, NC. Jeffrey appears in all Playhouse productions and is our stage and artistic director. Jeffrey recently completed his Doctor of Ministry Degree. He also earned a Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance and a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Musical Theatre from San Diego State University. Jeffrey was ordained in 1978 and is a proud member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma.

    Sandra Krueger (Mary - Mother of Jesus) moved to Elizabeth City recently from Findlay, OH. She earned a Master of Music Degree in Opera and Musical Theatre from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Whitworth University in Spokane, WA. Sandra is an adjunct professor at college of The Albemarle where she teaches music appreciation classes. Previous roles include Alice Beane in Titanic: the Musical, Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Jean Louise Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird. Sandra has a bubbly and delightful personality and we welcome her to our Rocky Hock cast.

    Mariah Schierer (Mary Magdalene) is originally from Greene, Maine and is an accomplished dancer, actor, and singer. She is the Performing Arts Center manager at COA in Elizabeth City and has been with Rocky Hock now for five years. Mariah earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Dance from Dean College in Franklin, MA. She has worked professionally with several theatres on the east coast and toured with VEE Corp as Harmony Bear in Care Bears Live. Mariah and Nathan were married in 2012 and make their home in Edenton.

    Nathan Schierer (John) is originally from Fillmore, NY. He is a graduate of Houghton College in Houghton, NY where he earned a Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance. Nathan is the Rocky Hock Playhouse box office, office, and road manager and has been with the company now for six years. Nathan is the set designer and crew chief for many COA COAST Players productions and frequently appears on stage in COAST shows. He is also the music minister at Mt. Olivet UMC in Manteo, NC.

    Darryl Stallings (Jedediah / Peter) has lived all of his life in Eastern NC. He attended Holmes Bible College in Greenville, SC. Darryl has been a member of the stock company of actors at the Rocky Hock Playhouse for over thirteen years. He is married to Wanda and they have two beautiful children, Charity and Nathaniel. He is a founding member of the gospel group "Step of Faith" and the pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in South Mills, NC.
