Recent cases muddy waters of Title IX compliance

    Recent legal battles have created confusion about the future of Title IX, the federal law designed to prohibit sex-based discrimination in American education. Campbell University's Title IX coordinator tried Monday to help the John Locke Foundation's Shaftesbury Society make sense of the rapidly changing legal landscape.

    Kellie Slappey Nothstine reminded her audience that a law that initially focused largely on women's access to athletic teams has expanded in recent years to focus on cases of alleged sexual assault. Now the Obama administration is using Title IX as a vehicle to create new legal protections for transgender students, including the controversial issue of which bathrooms and locker rooms those students should be permitted to use.

    In the video clip above, Nothstine discusses the impact of a Virginia case involving a transgender student suing a school district over access to single-sex facilities.
