Executive Mansion and Western Residence to be lit gold

    Raleigh and Asheville, N.C.     Governor Pat McCrory and First Lady Ann McCrory are raising awareness for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by lighting the Executive Mansion in Raleigh and the Western Residence in Asheville gold tonight.

    "Throughout the month of September, we will be applauding those families and children who have defeated and are working to defeat cancer," said Governor McCrory. "The sacrifices that they have made is why we have lit the mansion gold in order to raise awareness of cancer. Not everyone has survived this battle, and it's important that we remember all who have lost their lives."

    Governor McCrory praised North Carolina's health care systems for their nationally recognized children's hospitals. There are seven children's hospitals throughout the state, with six specializing in pediatric oncology.

    The American Cancer Fund for Children and Kids Cancer Connection reports that cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among children from birth to age 15 in the United States. The disease is detected in nearly 15,000 young people each year.
