Jones Defends 9/11 Families' Right to Justice | Eastern NC Now

News Release:

    WASHINGTON, DC     Today, Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) responded to President Barack Obama's veto of the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA), legislation that would permit a U.S. national to sue a foreign state for injury, death, or damages incurred from an act of terrorism:

• "Over 15 years have passed since the tragic attacks of September 11, 2001. The families of the victims have suffered more than we can imagine. They deserve the chance to seek justice in a court of law against the sponsors of these heinous acts.
• My colleagues, Congressman Stephen Lynch and Congressman Thomas Massie, and I worked for over four years to declassify the 28 pages of the Joint Inquiry into the September 11 attacks. Those pages detail substantial financial support from Saudi Prince Bandar bin Sultan and his wife to individuals linked to the 9/11 hijackers. By vetoing JASTA, the president has chosen to side with the Saudi sponsors of 9/11 instead of the families of American victims. That's wrong.
• I hope and pray that an overwhelming majority of our colleagues will share this view and assure that JASTA is passed into law through an override of the President's veto."
