Press Release:

Raleigh, N.C.     Governor Pat McCrory and First Lady Ann McCrory will light the Executive Mansion in Raleigh and the Western Residence in Asheville purple tonight in recognition of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in North Carolina. The first lady is an Honorary Board member with the N.C. Council for Women and Honorary Chair of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in North Carolina.

"We must continue to work together to break the cycle of domestic violence and its impact on North Carolina families, children, schools and in the workplace," said Governor McCrory. "That's why I am calling on all North Carolinians to observe October 1, 2016 as a 'Day of Unity' and I ask that we continue to work to put an end to not just physical abuse, but also the emotional and mental forms that domestic violence can take."

According to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, 99 women, men and children lost their lives due to domestic violence-related homicides in 2015.

Local domestic violence programs in North Carolina responded to approximately 101,940 crisis line calls, served nearly 48,601 victims and provided shelter for about 11,871 victims in 2015. Roughly 45 percent of those victims were children, according to the North Carolina Council for Women and Youth Involvement.

Governor McCrory's administration is dedicated to raising awareness for domestic violence and support services through the actions of the Governor's Crime Commission, the N.C. Council for Women and the Department of Public Safety.
