Asks Durham County to comply with public records requests

DURHAM, NC     Today the North Carolina Republican Party called on the Durham County Board of Elections and all other local boards of election to follow well established public records laws and allow citizens to fully inspect Absentee Ballot Return Envelopes. Last week, formal protests were filed in counties across the state for potentially fraudulent absentee ballots cast for Roy Cooper and other Democrats. After finding a ballot harvesting scheme in Bladen County, where an alleged individual filled out and witnessed more than 200 absentee ballots, a full scale investigation was launched by the state. Roy Cooper and the NCDP (North Carolina Democratic Party) left a paper trail, which allowed investigators to discover an NCDP funded political action committee that paid people to fill out and witness hundreds of fraudulent absentee ballots for Democrats.

In addition to funneling money to the Bladen County Improvement Association PAC, the NCDP also transferred money to Political Action Committees in 11 other counties. One of those other locations is Durham County. The first step in investigating whether or not there are more potential ballot mills in these counties is for our team to go through all of the absentee ballot signatures and witness signatures on the envelopes, which are public information, and see how many duplicates there are. If there are a high number of matching signatures, we would then inform the State Board of Elections and allow them to investigate.

"The fact that the Durham County Board of Elections refuses to let citizens see what is by law public information, serves to only heighten suspicion," said NCGOP Executive Director Dallas Woodhouse "Public information is in fact public, and must be treated as such by all local board of elections administrators."
