Said appointment of Anthony Scaramucci as communications director was a major mistake.

    by James Barrett

After months of rumors that he was on the verge of being fired, Sean Spicer abruptly resigned Friday morning soon after President Trump appointed Anthony Scaramucci to the role of communications director.

Reportedly over the objections of Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, Trump offered Scaramucci the communications position at around 10 a.m. Friday morning. Scaramucci is a New York financier with little political background, but has proven himself to be a fierce defender of Trump. Trump was reportedly frustrated with Priebus' delays on finding a replacement director, the position having been open for nearly two months since Mike Dubke stepped down.

According to The New York Times' Glenn Thrush, Spicer "vehemently disagreed" with the hiring of Scaramucci, to whom Spicer would have to answer. Though Trump reportedly asked Spicer to stay on, he instead announced his resignation.

"The president requested that Mr. Spicer stay on, but Mr. Spicer told Mr. Trump that he believed the appointment was a major mistake, according to person with direct knowledge of the exchange," Thrush reports. Citing two unnamed administration officials, Thrush says Spicer "flatly rejected the president's offer of a position subordinate to Mr. Scaramucci."

Thrush reports that Spicer's resignation was "a blow" to Priebus but apparently welcome news to many in the White House, including Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner, and Wilbur Ross.

"Mr. Scaramucci was to meet with Mr. Priebus on Friday, according to a West Wing official - and applause could be heard in the second-floor communications hallway when Mr. Scaramucci was introduced," Thrush reports.

While Spicer has at times had a rough go of it as press secretary, one major positive came of his time in the White House: he managed to inspire Saturday Night Live to produce an actually funny skit for once ...
