What is "Fair Share"? | Eastern North Carolina Now

Publisher's Note: Jim Bispo's weekly column appears in the Beaufort Observer.

Here we go again. The Prez is proposing to bail out people who are still managing to keep up with their house payments. And who picks up the tab for this?? Not the 46% of the population that doesn't pay any income tax. The rest of us - which, under the tutelage of the Anointed One, continues to be an ever decreasing number.

Do you suppose he really gives a darn about those folks, or could he possibly be looking for a campaign issue?? The latter seems more likely than the former. Another "bailout" is not likely to get very far with most of the Reps in congress or, when you get right down to it, a whole lot of the Dems either, so why bother?? A "good" talking point, that's why.. "I tried to save a whole lot of middle class folks several thousand dollars a year in house payments and those unfeeling and uncaring Reps aren't interested in working for the middle class. They only care about the rich." Yeah, right...

It seems incongruous that the Reps should be "protecting" the "rich" when it seems to be those same "rich" folks who thank them by shelling out $38,500 to break bread with the Anointed One or his wife?? Surely those who can afford than kind of money must be counted among the rich. So why do you suppose there is little or no "blowback" from those folks as the Anointed One continues to demand higher taxes from them??

It's interesting. The Prez, his spokesman, and almost all the Dems talk about raising the tax rate paid by the so called rich. It isn't clear that any of them really know what they are talking about except that they all seem bent on fomenting class welfare by asking the rich to pay an even greater amount of the total income taxes they already pay.. And what of those folks who seem to be able to afford the $38,500 to "break bread" with the Anointed One?? Do you suppose there is something going on in the back room that helps keep them coming back?? Just what kind of "consideration" do you suppose they get from the Anointed One and his minions (that no-one seems to hear about)?? Could it possibly be crony capitalism??

According to a 2007 article by Steven Moore in The American Enterprise Institute magazine The American (December):

The latest data show that a big portion of the federal income tax burden is shouldered by a small group of the very richest Americans. The wealthiest 1 percent of the population earn 19 per cent of the income but pay 37 percent of the income tax. The top 10 percent pay 68 percent of the tab. Meanwhile, the bottom 50 percent--those below the median income level--now earn 13 percent of the income but pay just 3 percent of the taxes.

   Further, they tell us:

In the 1980s when the highest marginal tax rate was 70% the top 5 percent of income earners paid 37 percent of all income taxes. Today, with the highest marginal rate at 35%, the top 5 percent pay 57 percent of all income taxes. Go figure...

Those numbers are "old" but the point remains the same. The so called "rich" are already paying most of the taxes.

If anything, the numbers have likely become even more skewed in the intervening years. In view of the foregoing, some of us are left wondering just exactly what "fair" means. In the world of those seemingly bent on fomenting class warfare, it apparently means something entirely different than most of us were taught by our mothers. Some of us were taught that when dividing something in half to be shared between two people, the person who did not do the dividing got first choice as to which half he (or she) wanted. In retrospect, that sounds a bit Machiavellian, but it sure worked to keep the game honest. Of course, leaving "fair" undefined certainly provides a lot of latitude in so far as being able to use it against virtually anyone they choose to. No sense in striving for a level field when it comes to politics.

Talking about springing for $38,500 for the privilege of breaking bread with the Anointed One, here's a thought about increasing taxes that the Reps could probably support. How about a 20% federal excise tax on all the "big dollar" meals that are purchased?? "Big dollar being defined as any "contribution that exceeds two times the "cost" of the meal (i.e. however much the caterer charged.) That should be quite palatable to many of the Dems - especially those who are demanding that the "rich" pay more taxes. Surely it is the "rich" who can afford a lunch (or breakfast or dinner) that is that expensive.
