On Thursday, NBC News officially fired morning host Megyn Kelly over comments she made on Tuesday regarding darkening one's skin for a Halloween costume. She said:

And people said that that was racist. And I don't know! I thought like, who doesn't love Diana Ross? She wants to look like Diana Ross for one day, and I don't know how that got racist on Halloween.

She quickly apologized for her statements, and acknowledged that she didn't know enough about the history of blackface.

"I want to begin with two words, I'm sorry..The country feels so divided and I have no wish to add to that pain and offense. I believe this is a time for more understanding, more love, more sensitivity and honor..Thank you for listening and for helping me listen too."

The media ran with the headline that Kelly had defended blackface. She didn't. Blackface is the heinous practice of dressing up in stereotypical makeup in order to mock black people; that's obviously not what Kelly was talking about. You'd have to be either an idiot or intellectually dishonest to believe she was. As I wrote yesterday, Kelly clearly wasn't being racist in her first comments.

Yet NBC News played up her comments, featuring them on Lester Holt's nightly news show; the head of NBC News, Andy Lack, blasted Kelly on Wednesday, stating, "There is no other way to put this: I condemn those remarks; there is no place on our air or in this workplace for them."

Then, on Thursday, The Daily Mail (UK) reported that Kelly had been fired, supposedly over the comments; the company will pay Kelly out some $69 million.

Here's the fact: NBC News wanted Kelly out. They are willing to stoke the flames of racial resentment in order to excuse their firing. It's that simple. NBC News paid Matt Lauer for years even though it was well known that he had a button on his desk that allowed him to lock the door in his office behind unsuspecting young women, whom he would then allegedly sexually harass. Perhaps Kelly should have covered for Lauer, as the higher-ups apparently did. Then she'd still have a job.
