Born: April 1, 1921, Died: November 10, 2018

Elizabeth Tayloe Fowle Carter, known to everyone as Tay, passed away peacefully at home on November 10, 2018 surrounded by her children and grandchildren.

She was born on April 1, 1921 to Elizabeth Tayloe Fowle and Samuel Richardson Fowle Jr. at the old Tayloe Hospital in Washington, NC. She was a lifelong member of Saint Peter's Episcopal Church. She was a graduate of Washington City Schools and Saint Mary's College. On September 15, 1945 she and Samuel Timothy Nicholson Carter were married at Saint Peter's, and together they shared sixty years.

Tay and Sam Tim reared four children on Respess Street in Washington. They are Elizabeth Carter Wolfe, her husband Barry, Lucile Nicholson Carter, Henry Clay Carter, and Mary Payne Carter. Their grandchildren are Mariah Elizabeth Lynch, David Nicholson Gerow, his wife Karen, and Samuel Louis Taylor. Their great-granddaughters are Carter Elizabeth Lynch, Lucile Wolfe Lynch, Daisy Quinn Gerow, and Clementine Elizabeth Gerow.

Tay was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother Samuel Richardson Fowle III, many cousins, and a host of treasured friends. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughters. She is also survived by her brother, David Tayloe Fowle, his wife Peggy, her sister-in-law Sadie Francis Fowle, her cousins Athy MacKenzie Cooper and Joshua Tayloe and his wife Carol, and her goddaughter Athalia Cooper. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

A loving team of devoted women managed Tay's comfort and care. They were special to Tay, and will always be appreciated by her family. Many thanks are due to Margaret Pendley, Lillian Oden, Shirley Tyre, Glenda Windley, Margaret Harris, and Diane Frederick.

Tay was an active member of Saint Peter's where she served as president of the Episcopal Church Women and as a long standing member of the Altar Guild. She was a member of the Ramblers Supper Club, and she spent many Fridays enjoying the company of her friends in the Lunch Bunch. Her sweet disposition and her sly good humor made her company a pleasure. She was a diehard Carolina basketball fan. Tay always enjoyed the family trips to Emerald Isle. At age 96, in a cute new bathing suit, she took her last dip in the ocean. Her quail suppers, hot biscuits with homemade pear preserves, and the thinnest, tastiest ginger cookies you have ever eaten will be discussed at family gatherings for years to come. Mostly Tay will be remembered for the love and devotion she shared with her family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at Saint Peter's Episcopal Church in Washington. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington. Tay's nephews will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington and at other times at her home.

Donations in Tay's memory to the Tayloe Memorial Scholarship Endowment at Beaufort County Community College will be gratefully received.

Condolences may be offered to the family at www.paulfuneralhome.com

Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington is honored to serve the Carter family.
